Implementation of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting Guidelines for Female Adult Patients Undergoing Anesthesia During Gynecologic and Breast Surgery in an Ambulatory Setting.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the most common complications after anesthesia. This evidence-based quality improvement (QI) project describes the implementation of a PONV guideline and the impact on providers' compliance with PONV risk assessment using the Apfel PONV score. ⋯ A PONV guideline for gynecologic and breast surgery can reduce the PONV incidence and improve anesthesia providers' compliance with PONV risk assessment and its documentation.

Use of a Checklist for the Postanesthesia Care Unit Patient Handoff.
This quality improvement project aimed to evaluate the benefits of implementing a checklist in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) setting to decrease the omission of health information during the handoff from anesthesia to PACU nurses. ⋯ The project was successful in implementing a standardized checklist and echoed the success of the articles reviewed. The use of a PACU handoff checklist can improve transfer of care by ensuring the provider receives more pertinent medical information during these transfers.

Pain Characteristics and Pain Interference Among Patients Undergoing Open Cardiac Surgery.
The aim of this study was to analyze postoperative pain severity, pain characteristics, and factors that affect pain for patients undergoing open cardiac surgery. ⋯ Patients with open cardiac surgery experienced severe pain that restricted their activities. Patients should be informed about pain characteristics they will experience and effective pain management methods to reduce pain.
