Effect of haematinic supplementation and malaria prevention on maternal anaemia and malaria in western Kenya.
To evaluate the effect of routine antenatal haematinic supplementation programmes and intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) in Kenya. ⋯ The haematinic supplementation programme was associated with significant reductions in anaemia in HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative women. The subsequent introduction of IPT was associated with halving of malaria, but no additional haematological benefit over haematinics.

Randomized Controlled TrialThiamin deficiency and uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Laos.
Thiamin deficiency complicates severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Thailand and may contribute to acidosis. We therefore estimated the frequency of biochemical thiamin deficiency in patients presenting with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in southern Laos. ⋯ Thiamin deficiency was common in Lao patients admitted with uncomplicated P. falciparum infection and was reduced following treatment of malaria and multivitamin supplementation. The role of this preventable and treatable disorder in malaria and other acute infections, and the incidence of beriberi in rural Laos, needs further investigation.

Costs and coverage of reproductive health interventions in three rural refugee-affected districts, Uganda.
Uganda has hosted an estimated 200,000 refugees in post-emergency phase settlements interspersed within host communities since 1990. However, refugee health service runs parallel to host in most refugee-affected districts. The process of integration of health services began in 1999. ⋯ Our study has shown higher costs and coverage in refugee than host health services. The findings suggest policy recommendations for improving the capacity, financing, organization and the performance of host health system in the refugee-affected settings.
