Trends in antibiotic susceptibility and incidence of late-onset Klebsiella pneumoniae neonatal sepsis over a six-year period in a neonatal intensive care unit in Karachi, Pakistan.
The incidence, change in antibiotic susceptibility, and risk factors associated with mortality of late-onset Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis during 2006-2011, in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a developing country, were analyzed. ⋯ There has been a rise in carbapenem-resistant strains of late-onset K. pneumoniae, associated with an increased mortality and limited antibacterial choices. Antimicrobial stewardship and rigorous infection control measures seem to be the only way to limit the spread of these strains.

Non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease is common in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms. Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are susceptible to NTM, but data about NTM in patients with non-CF bronchiectasis are limited. ⋯ NTM infections are common in non-CF bronchiectasis. MAC is the most frequently isolated NTM in these patients. There is also great variability in age and sex characteristics for NTM in non-CF bronchiectasis patients. Female patients with a low BMI are a high risk group for NTM infection in non-CF bronchiectasis. Routine screening for NTM is strongly recommended in this patient population.

The significance of serum urokinase plasminogen activation receptor (suPAR) in the diagnosis and follow-up of febrile neutropenic patients with hematologic malignancies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate serum levels of serum urokinase plasminogen activation receptor (suPAR) during the first week of febrile neutropenia and to demonstrate the significance of this biomarker in the diagnosis and follow-up of febrile neutropenic patients with hematologic malignancies. ⋯ We conclude that suPAR is an important biomarker that can predict infections in the early stage of febrile neutropenia with high sensitivity and NPV for patients with hematologic malignancies. It is also advantageous since it shows the response to treatment with antibiotherapy in the early stage.

Case ReportsPulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm caused by Streptococcus constellatus.
We report a rare case of mycotic pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) secondary to a lung abscess due to Streptococcus constellatus. PAP was confirmed by the pathological findings of the pseudoaneurysm, the presence of bacteria, and the microbiological analysis. PAP is uncommon, but it is important to recognize this condition because PAP can lead to fatal hemoptysis.
