Japanese structure survey of radiation oncology in 2009 with special reference to designated cancer care hospitals.
The structure of radiation oncology in designated cancer care hospitals in Japan was surveyed in terms of equipment, personnel, patient load, and geographic distribution, and compared with the structure in other radiotherapy facilities and the previous survey. ⋯ The structure of radiation oncology in designated Japanese cancer care hospitals was more mature than that in the other radiotherapy facilities. There is still a shortage of personnel. The serious understaffing problem in radiation oncology should be corrected in the future.

Comparison between cancer specialists and general physicians regarding the education of nurse practitioners in Japan: a postal survey of the Japanese Society of Clinical Oncology.
Japanese physicians' attitudes regarding the education of nurse practitioners (NPs) are not well described. ⋯ Our study suggests that cancer specialists expect NPs to provide symptom management and psychosocial support, clarify information, provide education, and work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Accelerated intensity-modulated radiotherapy plus temozolomide in patients with glioblastoma: a phase I dose-escalation study (ISIDE-BT-1).
We performed a dose-escalation trial to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with standard concurrent and sequential-dose temozolomide (TMZ) in patients with glioblastoma multiforme. ⋯ By using a SIB IMRT technique, a radiation dose of 70 Gy in 25 fractions (biological effective dose--BED--of 92.8 Gy) can be delivered with concurrent and sequential standard dose TMZ, without unacceptable acute toxicity in patients with glioblastoma.

Hepatic resection combined with radiofrequency ablation for initially unresectable colorectal liver metastases after effective chemotherapy is a safe procedure with a low incidence of local recurrence.
Chemotherapy can lead to tumor down-staging in patients with initially unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM); however, more than half of such cases are still considered to be unresectable because of disease progression, including multiple or bilobar CRLM, and an insufficient predicted remnant liver volume. In addition, there is little evidence supporting the use of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for patients with CRLM. This study compared the safety and efficacy of hepatic resection (HR) combined with RFA versus HR alone after effective chemotherapy in patients with initially unresectable CRLM. ⋯ These results suggest that HR + RFA after effective chemotherapy is a safe procedure with low local recurrence at the RFA site and is a potentially effective treatment option for patients with initially unresectable CRLM.
