There is increasing evidence that survivors of ARDS may have impairments in cognitive function, mood and quality of life. This study investigated associations between cognitive impairment, mood disorders and quality of life in a select group of ARDS survivors. ⋯ Significant cognitive abnormalities may be present in long-term ARDS survivors, particularly in memory and executive function. Impairments in cognition appear to be associated with significantly increased anxiety and worse quality of life.

Niemann-Pick disease is a rare inherited autosomal recessive disorder, currently classified into six subtypes and characterized by the intracellular accumulation of sphingomyelin in the liver, spleen, lungs, bone marrow or brain. The main pulmonary abnormalities described in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest consist of thickening of the interlobular septa and ground-glass opacities. This case report describes a patient with subtype B Niemann-Pick disease characterized by cysts and ground-glass opacities that were detected on HRCT of the chest.

Pseudomembranous aspergillus tracheobronchitis superimposed on post-tuberculosis tracheal stenosis has not been previously reported. In the patient described in this case report, the airway obstruction was worsened by aspergillus infection which responded to antifungal therapy and debridement of pseudomembranous tissues by rigid bronchoscopic procedures. A silicone stent was successfully placed in the trachea to restore airway patency when there was no more evidence of tracheobronchial aspergillosis. This case raises the questions of whether, how and when to restore airway patency in patients with tracheal stenosis and concurrent aspergillus tracheobronchitis.

C-reactive protein and other predictors of poor outcome in patients hospitalized with exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
CRP is elevated in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD), but there is little information on whether this biomarker can help to identify adverse short-term clinical outcomes. ⋯ Plasma CRP in combination with other variables obtained at admission may assist identification of high-risk patients with AECOPD.

Clinicopathological analysis of multifocal micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia associated with tuberous sclerosis in Japan.
This study investigated the clinical and pathological findings of lung disease in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) as previously reported in Japan. ⋯ Surgical investigation and immunohistochemical staining for pathological markers are useful for diagnosing MMPH when the radiological findings indicate multiple micronodules with ground-glass opacity in patients with TSC.
