The aim was to evaluate the effect of three nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates at different concentrations on osteoblast growth, differentiation, and antigenic profile, using the MG-63 cell line as osteoblast model, in order to determine the role of osteoblasts in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). ⋯ These findings suggest that low doses of nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates exert their effect on osteoblasts by altering their physiology, which would explain the disruption of their repair capacity and may be directly related to the development of BRONJ.

Quality of postoperative pain management after midfacial fracture repair--an outcome-oriented study.
There is a lack of literature regarding the procedure-specific quality of acute postoperative pain management after midfacial fracture repair. The purpose of the presented prospective clinical study was to evaluate postoperative pain management after surgical repair of midfacial fractures. ⋯ QUIPS is a simple and qualified tool to evaluate the procedure specific quality of acute postoperative pain management. Pain on the first postoperative day following midfacial fracture repair seems overall to be moderate. Nearly a third of the patients showed inadequate postoperative pain management. To prevent inadequate postoperative pain management, it is necessary to establish a continued procedure-specific outcome measurement.

The main purpose of this prospective, double-blind, randomized study was to evaluate anaesthetic parameters, postoperative analgesia and vasoactive properties of levobupivacaine and bupivacaine for lower third molar surgery. ⋯ It seems that the plain levobupivacaine (0.5 %) could be an effective alternative to plain bupivacaine (0.5 %) in those dental procedures which require profound bone and soft tissue anaesthesia.

Beneficial effect of methylprednisolone after mandibular third molar surgery: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled split-mouth trial.
Third molar (M3) removal is the model most frequently used for pain trials in oral surgery. Corticosteroids are frequently administered to reduce trismus and swelling after dentoalveolar surgical procedures. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of a single, preoperative oral application of methylprednisolone on postoperative trismus, pain intensity, and the subjective need for analgesic medication after surgical removal of impacted mandibular M3 (LM3). ⋯ In case of missing contraindications, the preoperative administration of methylprednisolone is recommended, a routine medication for more extended procedures in oral surgery.
