Multicenter Study
Global patient outcomes after elective surgery: prospective cohort study in 27 low-, middle- and high-income countries.
As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. ⋯ ISRCTN51817007

Sodium bicarbonate does not prevent postoperative acute kidney injury after off-pump coronary revascularization: a double-blinded randomized controlled trial.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common morbidity after off-pump coronary revascularization. We investigated whether perioperative administration of sodium bicarbonate, which might reduce renal injury by alleviating oxidative stress in renal tubules, prevents postoperative AKI in off-pump coronary revascularization patients having renal risk factors. ⋯ NCT01840241.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Magnesium sulphate attenuates acute postoperative pain and increased pain intensity after surgical injury in staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.
We evaluated the effect of magnesium sulphate on increased pain in 44 patients undergoing staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). ⋯ KCT0001361.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Impact of balanced tetrastarch raw material on perioperative blood loss: a randomized double blind controlled trial.
As 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.40 or 130/0.42 can originate from different vegetable sources, they might have different clinical effects. The purpose of this prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled trial was to compare two balanced tetrastarch solutions, one maize-derived and one potato-derived, on perioperative blood loss in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). ⋯ EudraCT number: 2011-005920-16.
