Safety and efficacy of tetrastarches in surgery and trauma: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130 is a frequently used fluid to replace intravascular losses during surgery or trauma. In the past years, several trials performed in critically ill patients have raised questions regarding the safety of this product. Our aim in this meta-analysis was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 6% HES during surgery and in trauma. ⋯ HES was shown to be safe and efficacious in the perioperative setting. Results of the present meta-analysis suggest that when used with adequate indication, a combination of intravenous fluid therapy with crystalloids and volume replacement with HES as colloid has clinically beneficial effects over using crystalloids only.

Interactive video games to reduce paediatric procedural pain and anxiety: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Procedural pain and anxiety in children can be poorly controlled, leading to significant short- and long-term sequelae, such as longer procedure times or future healthcare avoidance. Caregiver anxiety can exacerbate these effects. We aimed to evaluate the effect of interactive video game interventions on children's procedural pain and anxiety, including the effect of different types of video games on those outcomes. ⋯ Our findings support introducing easily available video games, such as distraction-based conventional video games, into routine practice to minimise paediatric procedural pain and child/caregiver anxiety.

Airway devices for awake tracheal intubation in adults: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.
Awake tracheal intubation is commonly performed with flexible bronchoscopes, but the emerging role of alternative airway devices, such as videolaryngoscopes, direct laryngoscopes, and optical stylets, has been recognised. ⋯ Flexible bronchoscopes, optical stylets, and channelled and unchannelled videolaryngoscopes were clinically comparable airway devices in the setting of awake trachela intubation and the time to tracheal intubation was shortest with optical stylets and longest with flexible bronchoscopes.
