Meta AnalysisThe Effects of Pharmacological Interventions on Smoking Cessation in People with Alcohol Dependence: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Nine Randomized Controlled Trials.
Pharmacotherapies are widely used for smoking cessation. However, their efficacy for people with alcohol dependence remains unclear. ⋯ Varenicline may promote smoking cessation in people with alcohol dependence. However, Naltrexone, Topiramate and Bupropion have no clear effect on increasing smoking abstinence among drinkers. The small number of studies and the low certainty of evidence indicate that the results should be interpreted cautiously.

ReviewThe Impact of Pharmacy Care and Motivational Interviewing on improving medication adherence in patients with cardiovascular diseases: A Systematic Review of Randomised Controlled Trials.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is prevalent worldwide, and for many patients, non-adherence to medication remains a problem. Motivational interviewing is a behavioural, communication strategy used as an intervention aimed to improve health outcomes. ⋯ Motivational interviewing could be an effective behavioural strategy to enhance medication adherence in patients with CVD. Although the evidence is promising thus far, further research is required to explore the impact of motivational interviewing on clinical outcomes as well as the feasibility of implementing motivational interviewing interventions within existing pharmacy care services.

Meta AnalysisThe effectiveness of self-management programmes for people with type 2 diabetes receiving insulin injection: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) receiving insulin injection are reported to encounter challenges to achieve optimal glycaemic control. The evidence on effectiveness of self-management programmes for T2D people receiving insulin injection is far from conclusive. ⋯ Self-management programmes have the potential to improve glycaemic control, weight management, blood lipids, self-management behaviours, self-efficacy and diabetes-related distress of people with T2D receiving insulin injection. More rigorous experimental trials are warranted to examine the effectiveness of self-management programme and its maintenance.

Meta AnalysisAssociation between polymorphisms of cytokine genes and diabetic nephropathy: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the microvascular complications of diabetes, leading to renal failure. In this study, we sought to systematically investigate the cytokine gene polymorphisms association with DN. ⋯ Overall, the pooled results showed that the dominant models of TNF-α rs1800629, IL-1β rs16944, IL-8 rs4073, and IL-10 rs1800896 were associated with increased susceptibility to DN. Also, the pooled analyses of the mutant allele vs wild allele of TNF-α rs1800629, rs1799964, IL-1β rs16944, and IL-8 rs4073 were associated with increased susceptibility to DN. Rs1800629, rs16944, rs4073, and rs1800896 polymorphisms were significantly associated with DN susceptibility, suggesting its potential use as a genetic risk marker in the population.
