Comparison of Modified Manual Acid-Phenol Chloroform Method and Commercial RNA Extraction Kits for Resource Limited Laboratories.
In a comparative experimental cross-sectional study, RNA was extracted from oral swabs and blood samples from 25 healthy individuals at the Department of Molecular Medicine, KNUST. RNA was extracted by the manual AGPC extraction method and commercial RNA extraction kits. The quantity (ng/μl) and purities (260/280 nm) of the extracted RNA were measured spectrophotometrically using the IMPLEN NanoPhotometer® N60. The presence of RNA in the extracts was confirmed using 2% agarose gel electrophoresis. Statistical analyses were conducted using R language. ⋯ The modified manual AGPC method has a very high yield of RNA extracts using blood samples, which could serve as an alternate cost-effective method for RNA extraction in resource-limited laboratories; however, its purity may not be suitable for downstream processes. Moreover, the manual AGPC method may not be suitable for extracting RNA from oral swab samples. Future investigation is needed to improve the purity of the manual AGPC RNA extraction method and also confirmation of the obtained results by PCR amplification and RNA purity verification by sequencing.

Connecting Pharmacists and Other Health Care Providers (HCPs) towards Drug Therapy Optimization: A Pharmaceutical Care Approach.
Pharmaceutical care services offered by pharmacists rationalize drug therapy, improve patient quality of life, and save patients' lives. This study was designed to optimize patient drug therapy through pharmaceutical care services offered by a pharmacist in consultation with other health care providers (HCPs) at a tertiary care hospital. ⋯ Pharmaceutical care services offered by pharmacists helped in optimizing drug therapy and patient care.

Severe Spontaneous Hematomas in Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19.
To describe the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics, medical treatment, and outcomes of a case series of severe spontaneous hematoma in COVID-19. Material and Methods. This retrospective study included patients hospitalized for COVID-19 who were diagnosed with severe spontaneous bleeding complications by following a standardized treatment protocol that included computed tomography angiography (CTA) from 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2022. The main outcomes were embolization and all-cause mortality. Baseline variables were analyzed for their association with mortality using bivariable logistic regression, and results were expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). ⋯ Although severe bleeding is an uncommon complication of COVID-19, its prevalence is higher than in inpatients without COVID-19, it usually needs embolization, and it is associated with high mortality.

Changes in Early T-Cell Subsets and Their Impact on Prognosis in Patients with Sepsis: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.
To analyze the early changes in CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+T-cell subset counts in patients with sepsis and their correlation with prognosis to provide a feasible basis for clinical immunomodulation in sepsis. ⋯ In the early stage of sepsis, most patients showed a decrease in CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+T-cell subsets, as well as in the CD4+/CD8+ ratio. The decrease in CD3+ and CD4+/CD8+ was related to some poor prognosis.

Retinal Microvascular Density and Perfusion during an Insulin-Induced Hypoglycemia Episode: A Warning Call.
To evaluate retinal vascular perfusion and density by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) before, during, and after hypoglycemia in individuals with diabetes mellitus with or without diabetic retinopathy (DR). ⋯ Acute hypoglycemia significantly alters the retinal vascularity in DM patients with and without DR, suggesting that repeated episodes of acute hypoglycemia could exacerbate retinopathy in the long term.
