Muscle atrophy in critically ill patients : a review of its cause, evaluation, and prevention.
Critically ill patients exhibit prominent muscle atrophy, which occurs rapidly after ICU admission and leads to poor clinical outcomes. The extent of atrophy differs among muscles as follows: upper limb: 0.7%-2.4% per day, lower limb: 1.2%-3.0% per day, and diaphragm 1.1%-10.9% per day. This atrophy is caused by numerous risk factors such as inflammation, immobilization, nutrition, hyperglycemia, medication, and mechanical ventilation. ⋯ J. Med. Invest. 67 : 1-10, February, 2020.

Introduction : Central venous catheter (CVC) use is essential for treating esophageal cancer. Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) are commonly used recently for improved patient comfort and safety. We compared centrally inserted central catheters (CICC) and PICC insertions and examined their safety. ⋯ J. Med. Invest. 67 : 298-303, August, 2020.

Rupture of pes anserine bursa in a patient with pes anserine pain syndrome due to osteoarthritis.
Pes anserinus pain syndrome is a common, clinically defined condition that is characterized by pain around the medial knee and tenderness over the upper medial tibia. [Introduction] The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the preference of enteral tube feeding between elderly inhabitants of Mugi town, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan, and their parents in various physical conditions. [Methods] This population-based questionnaire survey studied 300 randomly selected participants aged 65-80 years. Respondents were to consider a situation where eating was difficult, and were questioned on their desire for tube feeding, using a visual analogue scale (VAS) ranging from "do not want tube feeding (0)" to "want tube feeding (100)." [Results] Valid responses of 103 (34.4%) participants were analyzed. Under conditions of being "healthy," "bedridden," "with dementia," and "bedridden and with dementia," the median (IQR) of the VAS values for the desire for tube feeding were 31.8 (3.3 to 83.8), 19.3 (2.4 to 52.3), 5.2 (0.7 to 18.9), 4.0 (0.3 to 15.2) for respondents and 55.2 (11.6 to 92.2), 48.7 (5.5 to 85.5), 9.0 (1.2 to 46.8), 5.1 (0.1 to 36.5) for parents, respectively. ⋯ J.
