Comparative StudyIntrathecal mepivacaine and prilocaine are less neurotoxic than lidocaine in a rat intrathecal model.
Histologic evidence of the comparative neurotoxicity of lidocaine, mepivacaine, and prilocaine is incomplete. We compared the intrathecal neurotoxicity in rats among these 3 drugs based on morphologic and neurofunctional findings. ⋯ It is suggested that intrathecal mepivacaine and prilocaine are less neurotoxic than highly concentrated lidocaine in a rat intrathecal model.

Case ReportsParalysis after transforaminal epidural injection and previous spinal surgery.
This case discusses a rare but devastating complication of transforaminal epidural injection. Elements in the patient's history that may be risk factors are discussed. ⋯ This case report is part of a new and growing body of literature that demonstrates the potential risk of transforaminal injection. Further study is necessary to ensure that spinal vascular injuries can be kept to an acceptably rare level.

A study of the characteristics of single-injection insulated block needles in a biologic model.
Single-injection block needles are manufactured in many different lengths, diameters, and tip designs, but the literature contains no reports of methods to assess clinical characteristics of regional-block needles. A novel animal model for the assessment of the characteristics of single-injection regional anesthesia needles is described. ⋯ This type of biologic model can be used for the quantifiable and repeatable assessment of different needle tip designs. Needles with moderate resistance and high feel were preferred.

Comparative StudyComparison of 0.2% ropivacaine, 0.125% bupivacaine, and 0.25% bupivacaine for duration and magnitude of action in peripheral arterial blood flow induced by sympathetic block in dogs.
The aim of this study is to compare 0.2% ropivacaine with 0.125% bupivacaine or 0.25% bupivacaine for the duration and magnitude of the vasodilation effect induced by sympathetic block. ⋯ Ropivacaine may be equally potent to bupivacaine at equal concentrations in sympathetic block in dogs.
