An algorithm for the detection of individual breaths from the pulse oximeter waveform.
To determine if wavelet analysis techniques can be used to reliably identify individual breaths from the photoplethysmogram (PPG). ⋯ Our technique allows the accurate capture of individual breaths from the photoplethysmogram, and leads the way for developing a simple non-invasive combined respiration and saturation monitor.

Clinical TrialAgreement of an inert gas rebreathing device with thermodilution and the direct oxygen Fick method in measurement of pulmonary blood flow.
Inert gas rebreathing is a well established method for the non-invasive measurement of pulmonary blood flow. We tested the agreement in measurement of pulmonary blood flow (Qt rb) by a new inert soluble gas rebreathing device, the Innocor (Innovision, Copenhagen), with bolus thermodilution (Qt td) and the direct oxygen Fick (Qt Fick) method. ⋯ Acceptable overall agreement between the Innocor and these reference standards was demonstrated.

Calculation of O2 consumption during low-flow anesthesia from tidal gas concentrations, flowmeter, and minute ventilation.
We present the principles of a new method to calculate O2 consumption (V*O2) during low-flow anesthesia with a circle circuit when the source gas flows, end-tidal O2 concentrations and patient inspired minute ventilation are known. This method was tested in a model with simulated O2 uptake and CO2 production. ⋯ A similar approach can be used to calculate uptake of inhaled anesthetics. At present, with this method, the limiting factor in precision of measurement of V*O2 and uptake of anesthetic is the precision of measurement of gas flow and gas concentration (especially O2 concentration in end-tidal gas, FETO2) available in clinical anesthetic units.

Novel hand-held device for exhaled nitric oxide-analysis in research and clinical applications.
Changes in expired nitric oxide (NO) occur in airway inflammation and have proved to be important in the monitoring of inflammatory disease processes such as asthma. We set out to develop a novel hand-held NO-analyzer with a performance comparable to the present more costly and complex chemiluminescence instruments. ⋯ We also show an agreement with the existing 'gold standard' FENO measurement technique, within 0.5 ppb in a group of 19 subjects together with a high linearity and accuracy compared to reference gases. The new analyzer enables affordable monitoring of inflammatory airway diseases in research and routine clinical practice.

Information presentation on the monitor screen of ventilator machines affects nurses' response and decision-making during ventilation treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a new GUI (graphical user interface) prototype, the so-called circular display prototype can make deviations easy to detect. ⋯ Although the majority of the test subjects preferred the graphical circular display, the results implied that several aspects of this prototype should be improved in a future development study.
