Rhinoviruses (RVs) may cause pneumonia, but the characteristics of RV-associated pneumonia have not been adequately evaluated. ⋯ Severe RV-associated pneumonia patients were more likely to be immunocompromised and less likely to present septic shock. Overall clinical features were similar and mortalities of both groups were comparably high. Studies of larger cohorts encompassing mild to moderate pneumonia patients are needed.

On August 8 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) evolving in West Africa since December 2013, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). It is expected that the outbreak of Ebolavirus Disease (EVD) in West Africa will lead to increased testing of individuals in Europe for EVD. ⋯ Essential knowledge and knowledge gaps for an adequate laboratory response focusing on virus properties, infection kinetics, tests specifics and field performances were identified. An inventory of the laboratory capacity for EVD diagnostics among ENIVD laboratories was made.

Since August 2014, an increase in infections caused by enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) was reported in the USA and Canada, for the most part in children presenting with severe respiratory symptoms. ⋯ We observed an increase of EV-D68 infections in our population, both in children as well as in adult. In 2014 there have been 16 cases so far, compared to none in 2011 and 2013 and a single case in 2012. Phylogenetic analysis identified two similar clusters as shown in the USA and Canada.
