Total hip arthroplasty (THA) via the direct anterior approach has increased in popularity in the last decade, with research supporting enhanced early recovery; however, some investigators have reported increased early revision rates in direct anterior THA. We examined outcomes from a single institution's experience with a fully hydroxyapatite-coated collared femoral stem implanted via the anterior or the lateral approach. ⋯ We found no significant difference in revision rates between the direct anterior and direct lateral approach. Stem subsidence levels were in keeping with expected values, and no major changes in stem position occurred during the first postoperative year. Surgical approach did not appear to substantially affect biomechanical stem behaviour.

Predictors of mortality and cost among surgical patients requiring rapid response team activation.
Prior studies of rapid response team (RRT) implementation for surgical patients have demonstrated mixed results with respect to reductions in poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality and hospital costs among surgical inpatients requiring RRT activation. ⋯ RRT activation among surgical inpatients identifies a population at high risk of death. We identified several predictors of mortality and cost, which represent opportunities for future quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

"Never let a good crisis go to waste." - Sir Winston Churchill. ⋯ The value of Canada's Kidney Paired Donation program to the population cannot be overstated. Its greatest challenge as a national program, however, is the geographic separation of recipient and matched donor. Representatives from every transplant program in the country have been working toward increased use of kidney shipping in order to diminish the disincentive of donor travel. With transplantation program and travel restrictions in place to minimize the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the time to make a full transition from donor travel to the shipment of donor kidneys has clearly arrived.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols use evidence-based perioperative practices that reduce morbidity and length of stay and improve patient satisfaction. ERAS is considered standard of care; however, utilization remains low and substantial practice variation exists. The aim of this study was to pragmatically characterize variation in colorectal surgery practice and identify predictors of ERAS utilization. ⋯ Substantial practice variation in colorectal surgery still exists. Individual ERAS principles are commonly followed; however, ERAS behaviours are not widely formalized into hospital protocols.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a substantial impact on surgical training. We describe some of the challenges brought on by the pandemic and our program's province-wide response to them. We focus specifically on residents' provision of service, education and wellness.
