[From wound healing to modern tissue engineering of the skin. A historical review on early techniques of cell and tissue culture].
The early precursors of modern techniques of keratinocyte transplantation and tissue engineering of the skin are reviewed, starting with histological research into the processes of wound healing and of skin transplantation in the 19th century and continuing with the introduction of cell and tissue culture techniques in early 20th century medicine. The later experimental and clinical application of this research in dermatology and plastic surgery is also explored.

[Temozolomide as therapeutic option for patients with metastatic melanoma and poor prognosis].
Stage IV melanoma patients with a very advanced disease are usually excluded from clinical trials. We treated 25 stage IV patients with temozolomide - a cytostatic drug with 100% oral bioavailability and considerable penetration of CNS tissue. ⋯ Temozolomide represents a safe treatment option in patients with metastatic melanoma and poor prognosis.

During the last decades dermatology has been profoundly transformed from its descriptive origin into an important part of modern medicine and biosciences. Areas of interest and expertise in the future will likely be focused on major topics on clinical dermatology (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, skin infections including those sexually transmitted), dermatologic oncology (squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma), gene technology in biopharmacy and dermatopharmacology, and also the areas dealing with the aging of the skin and its appendages (dermatologic endocrinology, cosmetic dermatology). ⋯ While this is an important aim, it should not become our main task. Overall, the perspectives for dermatology are promising; in the end, its further development will depend on how modern societies will recognize its significance and reward its efforts.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
[Long-term results of adjuvant chemotherapy after therapeutic lymph node dissection in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma].
224 patients with malignant melanoma and palpable axillary or inguinal lymphadenopathy underwent therapeutic lymph node dissection at the Martin-Luther-University in Halle, Germany. between 1983 and 1994. 120 received adjuvant chemotherapy; we evaluated the effects of various regimens in this group. ⋯ No beneficial effect of adjuvant chemotherapies could be demonstrated.
