A 63-year old women developed livedo reticularis during treatment with amantadine. This reversible side effect of amantadine has been most often seen in women and is frequently associated with persistent ankle edema. We discuss the signs and symptoms, pathogenesis and treatment of amantadine-induced livedo reticularis.

Introduced in 1979, isotretinoin remains a major advance in acne therapy. Both hospital- and community-based dermatologists have experience with this valuable drug, which, owing to its causal principle of action, offers a large proportion of patients the prospect of a cure. Isotretinoin is now in use in more than 80 countries and has been prescribed for some six million patients. ⋯ Experience with the drug also provides a basis for reevaluating its safety profile. Finally, at a time when healthcare resources are limited, it is important to examine the cost-benefit ratio of this acne treatment versus other options. This paper is accordingly intended to provide a critical status report as well as a detailed and balanced set of recommendations for clinical practice.

[Localized cowpox/cat pox virus infection. Aspects of epidemiology, diagnosis and therapy].
Only few human cowpox/catpox infections have been reported until now. The diagnosis of bland localized infections may be missed, if this disease is not well known. ⋯ Using a typical case report, the characteristics of the disease, as well as the current aspects of epidemiology, diagnosis and therapy are summarized. The characteristic finding of intracytoplasmatic inclusion bodies by light microscopy can be demonstrated in a human biopsy-specimen for the first time and greatly facilitated the diagnosis.

[PUVA-bath photochemotherapy in Hallopeau's acrodermatitis continua suppurativa].
A 73-year-old man presented with severe, relapsing acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau, which had been resistant to prior local and systemic therapy for eight years. The patient was treated with selective hand PUVA-bath photochemotherapy. The cumulative dose of UVA used over 10 weeks of treatment was 54.6 J/cm2 on the palms and 26.8 J/cm2 on the dorsum of the hands. ⋯ In the four months following the PUVA therapy, there was no relapse. PUVA-bath photochemotherapy is an efficient therapeutic alternative in the treatment of acrodermatitis continua due to its clinical effectiveness and lack of any systemic side effects. It also possesses the advantage of allowing selective photosensitization of certain areas of the skin such as the hands.

[Bart syndrome--separate entity or a variant of epidermolysis bullosa?].
Bart syndrome was described first by Bart in 1966; it represents the combination of congenital epidermolysis bullosa, congenital localized absence of skin affecting the extremities and shedding or dystrophy of nails. This syndrome may be of clinical relevance because of its more favourable prognosis in comparison with other forms of epidermolysis bullosa. We report two patients with Bart syndrome and focus on the question, if this syndrome represents a distinct entity or a variant of epidermolysis bullosa.
