In light of the unprecedented public health crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is highly important to acknowledge the psychological impact of this mounting threat on healthcare professionals. Previous experience from smaller scale epidemics and emerging literature around COVID-19 show that the unparalleled amount of stress that healthcare workers are dealing with, is associated with increased psychological morbidities. We have depicted the psychological burden that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed on healthcare professionals in Greece and have reviewed the literature around the effect of previous epidemics on frontline healthcare staff. Moreover, we discuss potential triggers and the need for measures to minimise the psychological pressure on those at the frontline against this biothreat.

The CC chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) and its natural secreted ligand CC motif chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25) have been implicated in cancer metastasis. However, their metastatic potential in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. In the present study, immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression and localization of CCR9, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-7 in lung cancer tissue and adjacent normal tissue. ⋯ Following treatment with CCL25, lung cancer cells demonstrated higher migratory and invasive potential, which could be blocked by the CCR9 antibody (P<0.05). Survival analysis demonstrated that low expression levels of both CCR9 and CCL25 mRNA indicated favorable OS in patients with NSCLC. Altogether, these results suggested that CCL25 enhanced the phenotype associated with migration and invasion in NSCLC by regulating the expression of VEGF-C, VEGF-D, MMP-1 and MMP-7.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a common health issue worldwide, and P-element-induced wimpy testis (PIWI)-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) have been shown to be differentially expressed in a variety of diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential relationship between piRNA and NAFLD. A NAFLD mouse model was established using a methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet and methionine- and choline-sufficient (MCS) diet. ⋯ The RT-qPCR results demonstrated that piRNA DQ566704 and piRNA DQ723301 were significantly upregulated in the model group, which was largely consistent with the analysis results of the piRNA arrays. Therefore, the results of the piRNA arrays and the further analyses in the present study were considered reliable. Collectively, the present results suggest that differentially expressed piRNAs exist in NAFLD and may affect the development of NAFLD via related pathways.

The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate abnormal iron distribution in specific regions of the brains in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and R2* mapping, and to compare the diagnostic performances of QSM and R2* mapping in differentiating patients with PD with that in normal controls. A total of 25 patients with idiopathic PD and 28 sex-and age-matched normal controls were included in the present study and their brains investigated using a 3T scanner. Magnetic resonance imaging techniques, namely, QSM and R2* mapping, were applied to generate susceptibility and R2* values. ⋯ QSM showed higher sensitivity and specificity compared with R2* mapping to separate the patients with PD from the normal controls. There were no significant correlations between the susceptibility/R2* values and clinical features in all targeted regions of the brains in patients with PD. In conclusion, both QSM and R2* mapping are feasible to calculate the iron levels in human brains, and QSM provides a more sensitive and accurate method to assess regional abnormal iron distribution in patients with PD.
