Regional Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory established at ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) regularly receives samples for dengue screening and serotyping from patients of acute febrile illness (AFI) from Kolkata and adjacent districts. In this study, data over a three year period (August 2016-July 2019) was retrospectively analyzed to provide insight into the epidemiological trends of dengue fever in this region. ⋯ Dengue continues to be an important cause of AFI in the region and round-the-year preventive measures are required for its control. Serotype switching is alarming and should be monitored routinely.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, characterized by a low bone mass leading to increased bone fragility and hence, a greater susceptibility to the risk of fracture. Since age-related oxidative stress is one of the factors that has been implicated in developing low bone mineral density (BMD), leading to osteoporosis, this study wanted to explore the expression of antioxidant enzymes in individuals with osteoporosis. The present study focused on mapping polymorphism in an important antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) among osteoporosis and healthy Asian Indians. ⋯ In this study, the in silico analysis revealed the lower frequency of five alanine repeats in exon 1 of GPX1 and high TOS to be associated with osteoporosis. However, no polymorphism was found in exon 2 of GPX1 among the two study groups.

Information on recent cancer statistics is important for planning, monitoring and evaluating cancer control activities. This article aims to provide an update on the cancer incidence estimates in India by sex, age groups and anatomical sites for the year 2022. ⋯ The cancer incidence is continuing to increase in India. The new estimates will be helpful in planning cancer prevention and control activities through the intervention of early detection, risk reduction and management.

There are limited data from India on the post-COVID multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical profile of patients with MIS-A admitted to a tertiary care centre in southern India. ⋯ Fever and GI symptoms were the most common presentation of MIS-A. Elevated serum procalcitonin may not be useful in differentiating bacterial sepsis from MIS-A. Most patients responded to corticosteroids.
