To compare the cardiopulmonary effects of administration of a solution of xylazine, guaifenesin, and ketamine (XGK) or inhaled isoflurane in mechanically ventilated calves undergoing surgery. ⋯ Administration of XGK resulted in excellent anesthetic induction and maintenance with cardiopulmonary alterations similar to those associated with isoflurane in mechanically ventilated calves.

Use of bispectral index to monitor depth of anesthesia in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.
To evaluate the correlation between the bispectral index (BIS) and end-tidal isoflurane (ET(ISO)) concentration and compare the use of 3 BIS sensor positions in dogs. ⋯ In dogs, BIS values may not reflect changes in depth of isoflurane anesthesia in the absence of noxious stimulation. Of the 3 sensor positions, frontal-temporal positioning provided better correlation with changes in depth of anesthesia induced via changes in isoflurane concentrations. However, the sensor placements yielded similar results at SQI values > 50.

Effects of perzinfotel on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane in dogs.
To determine the effect of IV administration of perzinfotel on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in dogs. Animals-6 healthy sexually intact male Beagles. ⋯ IV administration of perzinfotel decreased isoflurane MAC values. Improved hemodynamics were associated with decreases in isoflurane concentration.

To establish reference mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) values of the equine thoracic limb and to assess the use of MNT values to detect pain associated with induced osteoarthritis in the middle carpal joint. ⋯ Pressure algometry provided objective assessment of nociception of the thoracic limb; however, MNT values were poorly correlated with clinical variables used to assess osteoarthritis.

To determine the pharmacokinetics of voriconazole following IV and PO administration and assess the distribution of voriconazole into body fluids following repeated PO administration in horses. ⋯ Results indicated that voriconazole distributed quickly and widely in the body; following a single IV dose, initial plasma concentrations were high with a steady and early decrease in plasma concentration. Absorption of voriconazole after PO administration was excellent, compared with absorption after IV administration. Voriconazole appears to be another option for the treatment of fungal infections in horses.
