Comparative Study
Total blood volume of Asian patients undergoing cardiac surgery is far from that predicted by conventional methods.
Current cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures use non-hematic fluids to prime bypass circuits, often resulting in marked hemodilution. Patients' total blood volume (TBV) is estimated prior to hemodilution. We aimed to evaluate differences between calculation of TBV by Nadler's formula, a classic reference book method, and an established formula calculated by the authors. ⋯ Total blood volume of Asian patients calculated by the authors differs markedly from that estimated by Nadler and classic reference book formulas, which suggests that more accurate calculation of TBV is needed for Asian cardiac patients requiring CPB, especially patients with valvular disease.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Comparison of the efficacy of the cardiac hypothermia and normothermia to myocardial damage in coronary artery bypass graft surgery with systemic normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass.
The aim of our research is to investigate the cardiac damage formed by either local cardiac hypothermia or cardiac normothermia technique in patients who undergone isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. ⋯ Myocardial damage was less than in normothermia group according to hypothermia group. The results show that ice-cold blood cardioplegia and local ice treatment of the heart during CPB seems to harm the heart more than warm blood cardioplegia.

Clinical outcome of the PAS-Port® proximal anastomosis system in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting in 201 patients.
The PAS-Port® Proximal Anastomosis System (Cardica, Inc, Redwood City, CA, USA) has been used worldwide since March 2003. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of the PAS-Port® Proximal Anastomosis System. ⋯ The clinical outcomes in patients treated with the PAS-Port® Proximal Anastomosis System were satisfactory compared with those treated with the conventional hand-sewing technique. The use of the PAS-Port system was not associated with higher adverse outcome in terms of overall survival, stroke, coronary reintervention-free survival and freedom from reintervention due to proximal vein graft failure.

The use of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide as a predictor of atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The value of Nt-pro BNP in predicting AF complicating cardiac surgery is not well studied. Our objective is to determine its predictive role in the occurrence of this complication after heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. ⋯ An early Nt pro BNP at H0 or H4, respectively, and with thresholds of 353 and 307 pg/mL could predict the occurrence of the AF. In this case, a primary prevention could be envisaged.
