Abdominoperineal resection is the one of the oldest surgical procedures for rectal cancer. Outcome after abdominoperineal resection for rectal carcinoma is not as good as anterior resection as the risk of local recurrence is higher and survival is poorer. ⋯ It allows a large excision and the initial results are encouraging. The purpose of this article was to analyse the oncological results of abdominoperineal resection and to develop the potential technical modifications of the procedure.
