Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialComparison of the effects of 2 doses of methylprednisolone on pain, swelling, and trismus after third molar surgery.
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of intravenous administration of 1.5 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg of methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MP) on pain, swelling, and trismus after third molar surgery. ⋯ No clinical benefit of the higher dose of MP was demonstrated.

Comparative StudyCarotid artery and jugular vein invasion of oral-maxillofacial and neck malignant tumors: diagnostic value of computed tomography.
This study aimed to disclose the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) images in detecting carotid artery and jugular vein invasion by oral-maxillofacial and neck malignant tumors. Study design Forty-three patients (44 tumors) who had had enhanced CT examination before surgical treatment of oral-maxillofacial and neck malignant tumors were evaluated. The CT manifestations of all tumors were retrospectively compared with the surgical findings. ⋯ Various CT findings are of value in the diagnosis of oral-maxillofacial and neck malignant tumors that affect the carotid arteries and jugular veins. Comparatively, the signs of compression and deformation of the CCA or ICA, segmental obliteration of the JV, undefined CCA or ICA wall, and fat or fascial plane deletion between a tumor and the CCA or ICA may be valuable in diagnosing ICA and JV invasion, although accurate diagnosis of CCA or ICA involvement by the oral-maxillofacial and neck malignant tumors remains difficult.

Comparative StudyOral candidiasis in hematopoietic cell transplantation patients: an outcome-based analysis.
Despite aggressive antifungal prophylaxis, the increased risk for systemic fungal infection in recipients of hematopoietic cell transplants (HCT) continues to be a significant concern because Candida infection can cause morbidity and mortality in these patients. The objectives of this study were to examine the relationship of oral colonization by Candida species to systemic infection, mortality, and the impact of antifungal treatment on a population of recipients of HCT. ⋯ Despite systemic and topical antifungal prophylaxis, oropharyngeal colonization by Candida species was common in patients who had received HCT. Candidiasis was commonly present in those who did not survive the early transplant period. Of the 25 patients who died early after the transplantation, 92% had ulcerative mucositis in comparison with 70% of those who survived, reflecting the association of oral mucositis with the toxicity of HCT. There was a significant relationship among allogeneic and autologous HCT, length of stay, and colonization of Candida. In patients undergoing systemic antifungal prophylaxis, chlorhexidine rinse was statistically more effective in reducing colonization by Candida than chlorhexidine and nystatin combined (P =.046).

Treatment of severe erosive gingival lesions by topical application of clobetasol propionate in custom trays.
We sought to describe the response of patients with severe erosive gingival lesions to treatment with clobetasol propionate in Orabase paste administered in trays. The adverse effects were also recorded. ⋯ The application of an Orabase paste of 0.05% clobetasol 17-propionate plus 100,000 IU/cc of nystatin by means of a tray appears to be an efficacious treatment for severe erosive gingival lesions.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually single in occurrence and located in the mandible. Multiple cysts are reported in patients with conditions such as mucopolysaccharidosis and basal cell nevus syndrome. We present the radiologic findings of bilateral impacted maxillary cuspids with dentigerous cysts displacing the maxillary sinuses in a nonsyndromic patient, a condition that, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported.
