A short history of the microsurgery training and research laboratory at Gulhane Military Medical Academy.
Microsurgical techniques have played a crucial role in the development of neurosurgery and microsurgical education has an involuting role to gain surgical competence in neurosurgery. Microsurgery laboratory at Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA) was established in 1985 by Prof. Erdener Timurkaynak within the Research-Development Building. ⋯ Over the past twenty-five years, 288 courses had been held in the microsurgical laboratory and more than 1000 surgeons from different fields and specialties were trained. Many of them conducted hundreds of research projects and published scientific papers during this period. This laboratory enters in the 21st century as a dynamic research and education center committed to the continuing delivery of education, as well as ongoing research of microsurgery for the coming 100 years.

The treatment of cerebral salt wasting with fludrocortisone in a child with lissencephaly.
Hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte disorder in critically ill neurological patients. The major differential diagnoses in this situation are the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, marked by inappropriate retention of free water, and cerebral salt wasting, characterized by excessive urinary loss of sodium and resulting in polyuria and extracellular volume contraction. Cerebral salt wasting is a syndrome of hyponatremia due to increased urine output and excessive natriuresis described in patients with central nervous system disease. ⋯ We present a 34-month-old boy with lissencephaly who developed cerebral salt wasting after brain biopsy. The patient was treated with hypertonic saline and multiple antiepileptic drugs. Fludrocortisone supplementation effectively treated cerebral salt wasting.

Vertebral artery insult at the transverse foramina by gun shot wounds: report of two cases.
The vertebral artery (VA) is well protected through its course at the cervical transverse foramina and penetrating injuries of VA are mostly caused by gun shot wounds. The mechanism of injury in these wounds is described as the kinetic energy transferred by the bullet, which always depends on its mass and speed. ⋯ The first patient was assaulted by bullet that resulted in vertebral artery occlusion, whereas a smaller pellet was found in the second one and arterial flow was not influenced on the site of the damaged transverse foramina. Successful management of these injuries should include careful analysis of the bullet characteristics that is directly related to the intensity of damage.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is a rare, benign fibroosseous lesion. It typically arises in the mandible and maxilla, and less frequently in the skull bones. We report a case of GCRG of the axis, which is the first to be reported in the literature. ⋯ The etiopathogenesis of GCRG is still controversial and the differential diagnosis, especially from giant cell tumor of bone is quite difficult. The treatment of choice for these lesions is complete surgical removal. Some authors recommend radiotherapy if total removal fails.

To investigate the relation of depression and pain-related disability associated with Low Back Pain (LBP). ⋯ Determination of the frequency and intensity of low back pain and related factors is needed for the prevention and management of pain. Mood disorders and self reported restriction in daily activities should be screened in patients with low back pain.
