Raphael Acquaviva: the forgotten pioneer of modern neurosurgery in Morocco.
For the young generations, it is important to state the values that define and recognize the role of leaders and pioneers in neurosurgery, especially in developing countries. This subject seems often overlooked. In Morocco, the real birth of modern neurosurgery as an independent surgical specialty was undoubtedly made thanks to Doctor Raphael Acquaviva during the 1950s and 1960s, when he founded the first neurosurgical department in Casablanca. ⋯ Moreover, he was involved in medical publications and education in his host country. In this article, the author reviews Acquaviva's career trajectory in its historical context, highlighting its impact on modern neurosurgery in Morocco and abroad. This contribution could be a good start to collect information to preserve the national neurosurgical memory in many developing countries.

We sought to determine the proportion and number of female neurosurgeons in the workforce at different stages of practice. ⋯ The number of practicing female neurosurgeons within the United States is increasing, as shown by the growing percentage of women who are earlier in their surgical careers.

The aim of this study was to characterize the payments made by medical industry to neurosurgeons from 2014 to 2018. ⋯ Our study shows that over the most recent 5-year period (2014-2018) of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Open Payments Database, there was a decreasing trend of the total number of payments, but an increasing trend of the total amount paid to neurosurgeons.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Spread in a Child with Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma: A Report with Cytopathological Evidence.
Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA), a relatively uncommon, World Health Organization grade II tumor of astrocytic origin, occurs in children and in general carries good prognosis. The recently identified anaplastic PXA (grade III) type shows poor outcome. Rarely, these said tumors can display an aggressive clinical course with features of leptomeningeal spread. Such cases are mostly seen in adults, with rare instances reported in the pediatric age group. ⋯ The case is an indicator of the need for craniospinal screening protocol in patients with PXA, especially the anaplastic variety, both at the time of initial diagnosis and follow-up.

To identify the impact of different surgical approaches for lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) on complications, reoperations/readmissions, and health care utilization. ⋯ mAP procedures are associated with higher cumulative complications and health care utilization compared with other procedures and the difference in health care utilization tends to decrease over 12 and 24 months.
