Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy is an increasingly popular treatment for medically intractable epilepsy. During a review of our cases, we noted that one of the senior authors give patients 1 week of antibiotic prophylaxis after VNS surgery while the other does not. We reviewed our experience with postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis after VNS surgery. ⋯ Just as with any hardware implantation, infection of the hardware can lead to significant morbidity. However, the use of postoperative oral antibiotic prophylaxis did not show benefit in reducing the infection rate.

This study aimed to analyze craniocervical sagittal balance parameters in an asymptomatic population revealing the interaction of craniocervical compensation with the horizontal gaze and to identify a new parameter that can be evaluated more easily with the horizontal gaze. ⋯ The factors affecting horizontal gaze are C2S, C2-7 lordosis, O-C2 lordosis, and C2-7 SVA. C2S can be used as an indicator of the horizontal gaze in preoperative surgical planning and postoperative evaluation.

To determine if 2-in-1 patient-specific laminectomy and drill guides can be safely used to perform laminectomy and pedicle screw insertion. ⋯ This study has explored the development of novel 2-in-1 patient-specific, 3D-printed laminectomy guides with integrated pedicle screw drill guides, which are accurate and safe in the laboratory setting. These instruments have the potential to simplify complex surgical steps, and improve accuracy, time, and cost.

Sometimes during surgery for meralgia paresthetica, it can be difficult to find the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). The aims of this study were to study the prevalence of different anatomical variations in patients, compare preoperative ultrasound (US) data with intraoperative findings, and investigate the effect of type of anatomical variation on duration of surgery and success rate of localizing the LFCN. ⋯ Preoperative US is reliable in detecting anatomical variations of LFCN. This information can be very helpful in identifying the LFCN more frequently and easily during surgery, especially in more medial variants.

Based on the positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography (CT) image segmentation algorithm, this article explores the application of PET/CT in the recurrence and metastasis of thyroid cancer after differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). ⋯ PET/CT and 131I scans are similar in the diagnosis of residual thyroid and lymph node metastasis, but PET/CT has more advantages than does the 131I scan in the diagnosis of bone metastasis and lung metastasis. PET/CT can still find other benign and malignant lesions, which is of great value in the restaging of DTC. The imaging effect of WBS lung lesions in older patients is not good. The presence of stripe, calcification, and patch shadows in the lungs is not conducive to the imaging of WBS lung metastases. Lung strips and calcification affect the WBS lung main factors for imaging of metastases.
