With a varying annual incidence across populations, traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) remains a public health concern of utmost importance, especially in developing countries with an incidence rate ranging from 12.7 to 29.7 per million people and a postulated increase in the number of patients living with undesirable complications of this condition. It is against this background that we reviewed the literature to bring to light the epidemiology, burden, management, and outcomes of TSCIs across Africa. ⋯ The incidence of the traumatic condition in certain parts of Africa is significantly higher than in other parts of the world, suggesting the need for an urgent call to action regarding addressing its key drivers.

Risk Factors for Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage after Extradural Spine Surgery: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is 1 of the common complications of spine surgery and is largely caused by intraoperative or postoperative dural tears. Associations of different factors with postoperative CSF leakage have not been consistent. In this study we aimed to identify demographic, disease-related, and surgical risk factors for CSF leakage after extradural spine surgery in a systematic review and meta-anlysis. ⋯ This study will provide a reference for the identification of patients at high risk of developing CSF leakage, which suggests clinicians to strengthen the observation of drainage fluid in high-risk groups.

The Efficacy of Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy for Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
Recently, intervention with endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) has emerged as a potential minimally invasive alternative to traditional treatments (ventriculoperitoneal shunting). The clinical response to these interventions is variable and unclear. The objective of this review was to assess the efficacy of endoscopic third ventriculostomy in treating patients with iNPH. ⋯ Preliminary synthesis of ETV clinical outcomes across all 12 studies revealed a success rate of 60.2%. Additionally, meta-analysis revealed that iNPH patients younger than or equal to 65 years of age were significantly more likely to respond successfully to ETV intervention. Heterogeneity was inconsequential in this analysis.

Radiation was first demonstrated to be associated with cavernomagenesis in 1992. Since then, a growing body of literature has shown the unique course and presentation of radiation-induced cavernous malformations (RICMs). This study summarizes the literature on RICMs and presents a single-center experience. ⋯ RICMs have a unique course and epidemiology. RICMs should be considered when patients with a history of radiation present with neurologic impairment. When RICMs are identified, symptomatic patients can be treated effectively with surgical excision and close follow-up.

Meningiomas are common intracranial tumors. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are emerging to improve accuracy in 4 primary domains: classification, grading, outcome prediction, and segmentation. Such algorithms include both traditional approaches that rely on hand-crafted features and deep learning (DL) techniques that utilize automatic feature extraction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of published traditional ML versus DL algorithms in classification, grading, outcome prediction, and segmentation of meningiomas. ⋯ ML on meningiomas is mostly carried out with traditional methods. For meningioma grading, traditional ML methods generally had a higher LR+, while DL models a lower LR-.
