With a varying annual incidence across populations, traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) remains a public health concern of utmost importance, especially in developing countries with an incidence rate ranging from 12.7 to 29.7 per million people and a postulated increase in the number of patients living with undesirable complications of this condition. It is against this background that we reviewed the literature to bring to light the epidemiology, burden, management, and outcomes of TSCIs across Africa. ⋯ The incidence of the traumatic condition in certain parts of Africa is significantly higher than in other parts of the world, suggesting the need for an urgent call to action regarding addressing its key drivers.

The general objectives of spine surgery are to alleviate pain, restore neurologic function, and prevent or treat spinal deformities or instability. The accumulating expanse of outcome measures has allowed us to more objectively quantify these variables and, therefore, gauge the success of treatments, ultimately improving the quality of the delivered health care. ⋯ Subjective measures provide valuable insights into patient experiences and perceptions of treatment outcomes, whereas objective measures provide a reproducible glimpse into key radiographic and clinical parameters that are associated with a successful outcome. In this narrative review, we provide a detailed analysis of the most common subjective and objective outcome measures employed in spine surgery, with a special focus on their current role as well as the possible future of outcome reporting.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are high-pressure, low-resistance arterial-venous shunts without intervening capillaries. Up to 60% of AVMs present with an intracranial hemorrhage; however, noninvasive neuroimaging has increasingly diagnosed incidental AVMs. AVM management depends on weighing the lifetime rupture risk against the risks of intervention. ⋯ Quantitative hemodynamic studies on the relationship between AVM flow and rupture risk have not reached a clear consensus; however, the preponderance of data suggests that higher arterial inflow and lower venous outflow in the AVM nidus contribute to increased hemorrhagic risk. Future studies should consider using larger sample sizes and standardized definitions of hemodynamic parameters to reach a consensus. In the meantime, classic angioarchitectural features may be more strongly correlated with AVM rupture than the amount of blood flow.

During the past decades, different methods have been described for anterior skull base reconstruction. Regarding larger skull base defects, few investigators have described the use of bone grafts to foster support and prevent frontal lobe sagging, herniation, or falling. The aim of this study is to describe the use of a rib bone graft, which could be an option in these cases due to its rigidity and dimensions. ⋯ The use of a cortical rib bone graft could be a safe and effective option in skull base reconstruction when managing large defects after cancer removal.

Awake craniotomy is an effective procedure for optimizing the onco-functional balance of resections in glioma. However, limited data exists on the cognition, emotional states, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with glioma who undergo awake craniotomy. This study aims to describe 1) perioperative cognitive function and emotional states in a multilingual Asian population, 2) associations between perioperative cognitive function and follow-up HRQoL, and 3) associations between preoperative emotional states and follow-up HRQoL. ⋯ This descriptive case series showed that patients with higher preoperative cognitive scores reported better follow-up HRQoL, while patients who reported more preoperative depressive and stress symptomatology reported worse follow-up HRQoL. Future analytical studies may help to draw conclusions about whether perioperative cognition and emotional states predict HRQoL on follow-up.
