Three-dimensional (3D) neuroanatomical knowledge is vital in neurosurgery. Technological advances improved 3D anatomical perception, but they are usually expensive and not widely available. The aim of the present study was to provide a detailed description of the photo-stacking technique for high-resolution neuroanatomical photography and 3D modeling. ⋯ The photo-stacking technique is a simple and inexpensive method to create 3D models and high-definition images that could prove valuable in neuroanatomy training.

The current study highlights the differences in surgery wait times and postoperative length of hospital stay (LOS) for brain tumor patients between high income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and across countries with different payer health systems. ⋯ There are limited data on surgery wait-times yet slightly more data on postoperative LOS. Despite a wide range of wait times, mean LOS in brain tumor patients tended to be longer in LMICs than HICs and longer for countries with single payer health systems than mixed payer health systems. Further studies are needed to evaluate surgery wait times and LOS for brain tumor patients more accurately.

Spinal stenosis is one of the most common neurosurgical diseases and a leading cause of pain and disability. Wild-type transthyretin amyloid (ATTRwt) has been found in the ligamentum flavum (LF) of a significant subset of patients with spinal stenosis who undergo decompression surgery. Histologic and biochemical analyses of LF specimens from spinal stenosis patients, normally discarded as waste, have the potential to help elucidate the underlying pathophysiology of spinal stenosis and possibly allow for medical treatment of stenosis and screening for other systemic diseases. ⋯ Screening for ATTRwt amyloidosis cardiomyopathy through LF specimens has led to the early diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis in several patients, with more expected to benefit from this process. Emerging evidence in the literature also point to ATTRwt as a contributor to a previously unrecognized subtype of spinal stenosis in patients who might, in the future, benefit from medical therapy. In the present report, we review the current literature regarding the early detection of ATTRwt cardiomyopathy via LF screening and the possible contribution of ATTRwt deposits in the LF to spinal stenosis development.

Transorbital neuroendoscopic surgery (TONES) comprises a group of approaches with indications expanding from orbital tumors to more complex skull base lesions. We analyzed the role of the endoscopic transorbital approach (eTOA) for spheno-orbital tumors, reporting the results of our clinical series and of a systematic review of the literature. ⋯ Despite its recent introduction, a significant number of spheno-orbital lesions treated with an eTOA are being reported. Its main advantages are favorable patient outcome and optimal cosmetic results, with minimal morbidity and quick recovery. This approach can be combined with other surgical routes or adjuvant therapies for complex tumors. However, it is a technically demanding procedure, requiring specific skills in endoscopic surgery, that should be reserved to dedicated centers.

COVID-19 has impacted neurosurgical care around the world. But reports describing patient admission trends during the pandemic have provided limited time frames and diagnoses. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on neurosurgical care provided to our emergency department during the outbreak. ⋯ The COVID pandemic significantly altered the demographics of our Neurosurgical ED patient population and continues to do so.
