Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) induce extensive transcriptional alterations to promote glioma development. However, IDH1 mutation contributes the better clinical outcomes of glioma. Further understanding the transcriptional and DNA methylation changes mediated by IDH1 mutation will provide new therapeutic targets for glioma. ⋯ RARRES2 was downregulated by IDH1 mutation and served as an unfavorable prognostic factor in glioma.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease. Complications such as traumatic spinal fractures are mostly caused by hyperextension and are unstable. We report the cases of 5 patients with AS surgically treated for thoracolumbar fractures. ⋯ To prevent postoperative neurologic complications after the surgical treatment of traumatic hyperextension thoracic and lumbar fractures in patients with AS, we recommend securing the fracture level with unilateral short-level stabilization under local anesthesia and then completing the operation with general anesthesia.

This study aimed to investigate the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic anterior spinal cord herniation, a rare condition. ⋯ Clinicians should avoid misdiagnosing patients with thoracic anterior spinal cord herniation with intervertebral disc herniation, arachnoid cysts, and other related diseases, and patients should undergo surgical treatment as early as possible. In addition, surgical treatment can protect the neurologic function of patients and effectively prevent the aggravation of clinical symptoms.

To compare patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) versus cervical disc replacement (CDR) for time to minimum clinically important difference (MCID) achievement and predictors of delayed MCID achievement for the patient-reported outcomes (PROs), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Function, Neck Disability Index, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) neck, and VAS arm. ⋯ Most patients achieved MCID in physical function, disability, and back pain outcomes within 2 years of surgery. Patients undergoing CDR achieved MCID faster in physical function. Early predictors of MCID achievement were CDR procedure, Asian ethnicity, and elevated preoperative PROs of pain outcomes. Workers' compensation was a late predictor. These findings may be helpful in managing patient expectations.

The existing data about language recovery in bilingual patients come from few studies on acute lesional deficits like stroke or traumatic injury. Still, little is known about the neuroplasticity potential of bilingual patients who undergo resection of gliomas affecting language-eloquent brain regions. In this study, we prospectively evaluated the pre- and postoperative language functions among bilinguals with eloquent region gliomas. ⋯ This study shows L1 is less vulnerable to operative insults and L2 may be damaged even when L1 is preserved. We would suggest the more sensitive L2 be used as the screening tool and L1 be used for confirmation of positive responses during language mapping.
