The confirmation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in the setting of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) by imaging involves a growing toolset of multimodal advanced spinal and skull base imaging techniques, for which exists a unique set of challenges for each CSF leak type. Furthermore, the repertoire of minimally invasive CSF leak treatment beyond nontargeted epidural blood patch administration has grown widely, with varied practices across institutions. This review describes current diagnostic imaging and treatment modalities as they apply to the challenges of CSF leak localization and management.

Spine surgery accounts for a large proportion of neurosurgical procedures, with approximately 313 million spine surgeries conducted annually worldwide. Considering delayed recovery and postoperative complications that are commonly reported, there has been a recent shift toward minimally invasive spine procedures conducted under local anesthesia. Despite proven success, there exists a limited body of literature on the use of awake surgery in spinal procedures. ⋯ This study provides a comprehensive overview of the most-cited articles in the field of awake spine surgery. Specifically, it identifies areas that are well represented in the literature and those which are underrepresented and should be areas of continued future research.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have been introduced to neurosurgery with the goal of improving the experience of human visualization. In recent years, the application of remote AR and VR has opened new horizons for neurosurgical collaboration across diverse domains of education and patient treatment. Herein, we aimed to systematically review the literature about the feasibility of this technology and discuss the technical aspects, current limitations, and future perspectives. ⋯ The results from this systematic review suggest that AR and VR technologies are dynamically advancing to offer remote collaboration in neurosurgery. Although still incipient in development and with an imperative need for technical improvement, remote AR and VR hold a frontierless potential for patient monitoring, neurosurgical education, and long-distance surgical assistance.

Intracranial phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors: A systematic literature review of a rare entity.
Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors (PMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms known for producing Tumor-induced Osteomalacia (TIO). TIO is an uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by radiographic evidence of inadequate bone mineralization and analytical abnormalites. ⋯ Skull base PMTs with intracranial extension are extremely rare tumors. Most patients are middle-aged adults with a PMT predominantly located in anterior cranial fossa. Surgery is the current treatment of choice with optimal outcome at 1-year follow-up, although recurrence could be present in almost 25% of the cases.

Imaging of Adult Malignant Soft Tissue Tumors of the Spinal Canal: A Guide for Spine Surgeons.
Malignant soft tissue spinal canal tumors compromise 20% of all spinal neoplasms. They may be primary or metastatic lesions, originating from a diverse range of tissues within and surrounding the spinal canal. These masses can present as diverse emergencies such as secondary cauda equina syndrome, vascular compromise, or syringomyelia. Interpretation of malignant soft tissue spinal canal tumors imaging is an essential for non-radiologists in the setting of emergencies. This task is intricate due to a great radiologic pattern overlap among entities. ⋯ In this review, diagnostic strategies for several spinal cord tumors were presented, including anaplastic ependymoma, metastatic spinal cord tumors, anaplastic and malignant astrocytoma, lymphoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors , and primary central nervous system melanoma. Although the characterization of spinal cord tumors can be challenging, comprehensive knowledge of imaging features can help overcome these challenges and ensure optimal management of spinal canal lesions.
