Pediatric hydrocephalus is a significant health burden globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Data from specific regions such as KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, are lacking. This study aimed to investigate pediatric hydrocephalus by comparing 4 distinct 5-year periods. ⋯ This study provides comprehensive insights into pediatric hydrocephalus in KwaZulu-Natal. Monitoring temporal trends and predictors of outcomes will guide future interventions to mitigate the burden of pediatric hydrocephalus in the region.

Within the field of pediatric neurosurgery, insurance status has been shown to be associated with surgical delay, longer time to referral, and longer hospitalization in epilepsy treatment, myelomeningocele repair, and spasticity surgery.1,2 The aim of this study was to investigate the association of insurance status with inpatient adverse events (AEs), length of stay (LOS), and costs for newborns diagnosed with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). ⋯ Demographic characteristics, mean LOS, and mean total cost differed significantly between Medicaid and PI patients, indicating potential disparities based on insurance status. However, insurance status was not independently associated with increased healthcare utilization, necessitating further research in this area of study.

Conventionally, neural transfer of the spinal accessory nerve to the suprascapular nerve for shoulder abduction in traumatic brachial plexus injury is performed via the anterior approach. However, important advantages of the posterior approach have made it an alternative option, such as the proximity of neural coaptation to the muscle to be reinnervated and negating the effects of a second injury to the suprascapular nerve. ⋯ External rotation at the shoulder is better via the posterior approach, but no difference in abduction was noted. Patients who underwent the posterior approach were more satisfied with the recovery, and surgeons preferred the posterior approach.

Comparison of the Transcranial Approach and Transsphenoidal Approach Based on the Anatomical Location of Origin in Pediatric Craniopharyngiomas.
Various clinical classifications of craniopharyngiomas (CRPs) have been proposed to suggest optimal surgical planning. We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of pediatric CRPs and the clinical significance of anatomical classification in relation to the diaphragm sellae. ⋯ Over time, with the adoption of EEA at our institute, the impact of anatomical classification on the surgical approach has decreased. Nevertheless, an individualized surgical approach should be employed to improve long-term outcomes and minimize complications for pediatric CRPs.

Comparative analysis of patients undergoing microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia caused by solely arterial or solely venous compression.
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) due to venous compression is far less common than that due to arterial compression, and its pathogenesis is less clear. We investigated the clinical and imaging features of TN caused by solely venous compression by measuring the morphologies of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) and the trigeminal nerve. ⋯ The morphological features of the PCF differed between patients with TN of venous and those with TN of arterial etiology. Age-related changes in brain morphology and changes of course of the trigeminal nerve may also add to the possibility of developing TN, especially of venous etiology.
