Puncture-site complications in interventional radiology sometimes cause severe conditions. Vascular closure devices play an important role in preventing puncture-site complications. Vascular closure devices are divided into 2 types, the directly suturing or clipping type (active approximators) and adherent sealant types (passive approximators). However, which types of vascular closure device are the safest and most effective for achieving hemostasis remains unclear. We analyzed the efficacy of each type of vascular closure device and risk factors for puncture-site complications. ⋯ Passive approximator use in patients with shallow femoral artery depth increases puncture-site complications in neuroendovascular treatment.

Geniculocalcarine fibers are thought to be exclusively ipsilateral. However, recent findings challenged this belief, revealing bilateral recruiting responses in occipitotemporoparietal regions upon unilateral stimulation of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) in humans. This raised the intriguing possibility of bilateral projections to primary visual areas (V1). This study sought to explore the hypothetical decussation of the geniculocalcarine tract. ⋯ This study suggests a partial decussation of the fibers between LGN and V1, likely constituting the geniculocalcarine tract.

Intraoperative mapping of the nervous system is used to identify "eloquent" cortical areas. In this technical report, we describe a novel way of mapping the somatosensory cortex so that injury to those critical pathways can be avoided. ⋯ Sensory mapping of the cortex is possible with a handheld monopolar electrode. This technique is easy to perform and can help reduce neurological morbidity.

The SpineST-01 system is an image-guided vertebrae cannulation training system. During task execution, the computer calculates performance-based metrics displaying different visual perspectives (lateral view, axial view, anteroposterior view) with the position of the instrument inside the vertebra. Finally, a report with the metrics is generated as performance feedback. ⋯ Initial testing of the SpineST-01 demonstrated potential for the system to practice image-guided cannulation tasks on lumbar vertebrae. Results showed objective differences between experts, intermediates, and novices in the proposed metrics, making this system a feasible option for developing basic navigation system skills without the risk of radiation exposure and objectively evaluating task performance.

Neurosurgeons often use radiation to visualize blood vessels and implants intraoperatively. However, high exposure to radiation increases one's cancer risk. This study aims to investigate intraoperative ionizing radiation exposure awareness and associated morbidity among neurosurgeons. ⋯ There is a need for improved radiation safety awareness among neurosurgeons, especially in the context of rising usage of minimally invasive surgery. This can allow for a greater understanding of radiation-associated risks among neurosurgeons and guide the implementation of safer practices.
