Intracranial Dislocation of the Mandibular Condyle: A Case Report and Literature Review.
Intracranial dislocation of the mandibular condyle is an infrequent injury that can follow traumatic upward force at the chin. A limited number of cases have been reported, and an individualized approach for patients is often recommended. Nevertheless, several consistent strategies for reduction have emerged. ⋯ Appropriate surgical and nonsurgical approaches for addressing mandibular dislocation have emerged during the past several decades. When deciding on an optimal strategy, variables including patient age, time-to-diagnosis, accompanying injuries, prior failed maneuvers, and risk of resubluxation should be considered. Coordinated care between neurosurgery and otolaryngology teams can minimize complications and achieve successful reductions.

Intraneural granular cell tumor of a cervical dorsal nerve root: a case report and review of the literature.
Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a relatively uncommon predominantly benign lesion that usually presents as a solitary, painless cutaneous or submucosal nodule. Most of these tumors are found in the tongue. Although GCT is believed to have a Schwann cell origin, reports of GCT in peripheral and spinal nerves are uncommon. ⋯ The surgeon should be aware of GCT when encountering spinal nerve root tumors because it may alter the surgical approach necessary for adequate resection compared with more commonly encountered nerve sheath tumors.

Application of Ultrahigh Field MRI in the Treatment of Brain Tumors: a Meta-analysis.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for the clinical management of brain tumors, and the majority of scanners operate with static magnetic field strengths of 1.5 or 3.0 Tesla (T). During the past decade, ultrahigh field (UHF) MRI has been investigated for its clinical applicability. This meta-analysis evaluates studies pertaining to the application of UHF MRI to patients with brain tumors. ⋯ UHF MRI shows promise to improve detection and characterization of brain tumors, preoperative planning for neurosurgical resection, and longitudinal monitoring of the effects of radiation and antibody-based therapies. Technical innovations are needed to overcome field inhomogeneity and susceptibility artifacts in certain regions of the skull. Finally, larger studies comparing 1.5 T, 3.0 T, and 7.0 T or greater will determine whether UHF MRI gains acceptance as a clinical standard.

Long-lived inhabitants of the plateau region have a higher hemoglobin concentration, which is the leading cause of damage in various organs, especially the nervous system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hemoglobin concentration on mortality and neural functions after decompressive craniectomy in patients with hypoxia. ⋯ Elevated hemoglobin concentration has a serious impact on neurologic recovery and mortality, as seen in patients with acute severe head trauma after decompressive craniectomy.

Virtual Interactive Presence in Global Surgical Education: International Collaboration through Augmented Reality.
Technology allowing a remote, experienced surgeon to provide real-time guidance to local surgeons has great potential for training and capacity building in medical centers worldwide. Virtual interactive presence and augmented reality (VIPAR), an iPad-based tool, allows surgeons to provide long-distance, virtual assistance wherever a wireless internet connection is available. Local and remote surgeons view a composite image of video feeds at each station, allowing for intraoperative telecollaboration in real time. ⋯ Evolving technologies that allow long-distance, intraoperative guidance, and knowledge transfer hold great potential for highly efficient international neurosurgical education. VIPAR is one example of an inexpensive, scalable platform for increasing global neurosurgical capacity. Efforts to create a network of Vietnamese neurosurgeons who use VIPAR for collaboration are underway.
