Minimally invasive posterior atlantoaxial fusion: a cadaveric and clinical feasibility study.
Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques have several potential advantages for the patient over open techniques, including decreased loss of blood, postoperative pain, and recovery time. We aimed to demonstrate atlantoaxial fusion by using the MIS techniques, shown previously in only two reports. A smaller operating corridor with MIS may increase difficulty of instrumentation placement and risk of instrumentation-related complications. ⋯ Minimally invasive atlantoaxial fixation is feasible and safe. Preoperative CT is paramount for preoperative evaluation of the vertebral artery anatomy in relation to C1/2 vertebra.

To assess the outcome of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for patients with benign skull base tumors and trigeminal-related facial pain. ⋯ Although SRS offers excellent radiographic tumor control for benign skull base tumors, durable relief of tumor-related trigeminal pain without medication was noted in only one-fourth of patients at last follow-up.

Surface-rendered three-dimensional (3D) 1.5-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is useful for presurgical simulation of microvascular decompression. This study compared the sensitivity and specificity of 1.5- and 3.0-T surface-rendered 3D MR imaging for preoperative identification of the compression vessels of trigeminal neuralgia. ⋯ The present study showed that both 1.5- and 3.0-T MR imaging provided high sensitivity and specificity for preoperative assessment of the compression vessels of trigeminal neuralgia. Preoperative 3D imaging provided very high quality presurgical simulation, resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.

Surgical resection is most often performed for superficially located brain metastasis. We evaluate the use of gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) brain metastases located <3 cm away from the outer cortical surface. ⋯ GKS for NSCLC brain metastases is effective in patients with 3 or fewer resectable tumors. The need for a craniotomy in this subgroup of patients after GKS is very low.

NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that is related to tumor cell multidrug resistance and proliferation. Here we studied the involvement of Nrf2 in the migration and invasion of human U251 glioma cells. ⋯ Nrf2 is involved in migration and invasion of U251 cells, which may be related to MMP9.
