Sonodynamic Therapy and Sonosensitizers for Glioma Treatment: A Systematic Qualitative Review.
Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has emerged as an encouraging noninvasive technique that uses ultrasound to activate targeted agents to induce antitumor effects for the treatment of glioma. With extensive variation in the types of sonosensitizers, protocols for sonication, and model systems, a comprehensive overview of existing preclinical data on the efficacy of SDT in glioma treatment is warranted. ⋯ These effects are likely mediated by the oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species production, apoptotic signaling cascades, and intracellular calcium overload. Future research is needed to better understand the biochemical and mechanistic properties of SDT, and ongoing trials may help elucidate the clinical feasibility of glioma treatment with optimized sonically activated treatments.

This historical account reviews the course and lasting impact of Dr. Hussein Suleiman Abusalih (October 5, 1930 to December 6, 2021) in neurosurgery. ⋯ Our article provides a look into the life and impact of Dr. Abusalih as a prominent political pioneer and the first neurosurgeon in Sudan.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) management based on predetermined thresholds is not accurate in light of recent research on cerebrovascular physiology. Interpersonal and intrapersonal variations will lead ICP elevations to reach individualized thresholds for intracranial compliance impairment from one subject to another. Therefore reuniting the modern techniques of neuromonitoring besides ICP enables practitioners to have a more whole picture in anticipating neuro worsening and improving timing in decision making. ⋯ The authors' point of view is of particular importance for regions with resource heterogeneity and scarcity, where ICP monitoring is not available for all those in need and noninvasive techniques may provide a surrogate approach. If physicians who deal with acute-brain-injured patients in lower-resource areas understand that several tools besides ICP may improve their practice, it is possible to reduce acute brain injury morbimortality.

Transvenous embolization (TVE) of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) is an emerging endovascular technique that has shown high cure rates in selected cases. The rationale of our study was to determine authorship and worldwide institutional trends and contributions to the knowledge in this topic. ⋯ TVE of bAVMs is an emerging technique. Our search identified some scientific articles, without randomized clinical trials, but many case series from single institutions. French and German institutions are the pioneers in the field, and further research is required in specialized endovascular centers.

Neurovascular compression (NVC) as the cause of abducens nerve palsy is an infrequent event. Only a small number of cases have been reported in the literature, and the efficacy of microvascular decompression (MVD) for abducens nerve palsy remains unclear. ⋯ Vascular compression could be a potential cause of abducens nerve palsy. Gradual onset or episodic symptom of abducens palsy with a definitive radiological finding of vascular compression deserves considering MVD for abducens nerve palsy.
