Barriers and facilitators to learning and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in neighborhoods with low bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation prevalence and high rates of cardiac arrest in Columbus, OH.
Residents who live in neighborhoods that are primarily black, Latino, or poor are more likely to have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, less likely to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and less likely to survive. No prior studies have been conducted to understand the contributing factors that may decrease the likelihood of residents learning and performing CPR in these neighborhoods. The goal of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators to learning and performing CPR in 3 low-income, high-risk, and predominantly black neighborhoods in Columbus, OH. ⋯ The financial cost of CPR training, lack of information, and the fear of risking one's own life must be addressed when designing a community-based CPR educational program. Using data from the community can facilitate improved design and implementation of CPR programs.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA multicenter, randomized trial of a nurse-led, home-based intervention for optimal secondary cardiac prevention suggests some benefits for men but not for women: the Young at Heart study.
We examined the impact of a prolonged secondary prevention program on recurrent hospitalization in cardiac patients with private health insurance. ⋯ Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry Unique Identifier: 12608000014358. URL: http://www.anzctr.org.au/trial_view.aspx?id=82509.

Review Meta AnalysisComparative tolerability and harms of individual statins: a study-level network meta-analysis of 246 955 participants from 135 randomized, controlled trials.
Our objective was to estimate the comparative harms of individual statins using both placebo-controlled and active-comparator trials. ⋯ As a class, adverse events associated with statin therapy are not common. Statins are not associated with cancer risk but do result in a higher odds of diabetes mellitus. Among individual statins, simvastatin and pravastatin seem safer and more tolerable than other statins.

Hospital strategies associated with 30-day readmission rates for patients with heart failure.
Reducing hospital readmission rates is a national priority; however, evidence about hospital strategies that are associated with lower readmission rates is limited. We sought to identify hospital strategies that were associated with lower readmission rates for patients with heart failure. ⋯ Several strategies were associated with lower hospital RSRRs for patients with heart failure.

Comparative StudyCharacteristics and outcomes of patients receiving new and replacement implantable cardioverter-defibrillators: results from the NCDR.
Little is known about the clinical features, procedural risks, or survival of patients receiving replacement versus new implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). ⋯ Patients receiving replacement ICDs are older and at greater risk for death compared with those receiving initial ICD implants. The battery life of initial ICDs is shorter than previously reported.
