[Possible late complications after peridural anaesthesia (author's transl)].
140 women who had received peridural anaesthesia (PDA) during childbirth at the University Gynaecological Hospital, Basel, in 1977, were retrospectively questioned on the occurrence of backache and headache during the puerperium subsequent to peridural anaesthesia. The "matched pairs" technique was employed for the controls. ⋯ In the control group, this was true of 11 women (28%). 46 patients (33%) of the PDA group complained of increased headache during the puerperium, against 16 patients (11%) of the control group. 22 women (49%) of the PDA group felt disturbed in their daily work against 4 women (25%) among the controls. The findings are compared with data in literature, and the aetiology of the symptoms is discussed.

Case Reports[A subglutaeal abscess as a possible result of pudendal anaesthesia (author's transl)].
Described is the subglutaeal abscess of a 17-year old primigravida that may have been the result of pudendal anaesthesia. This has to be looked upon as an extremely rare and unavoidable complication of obstetric regional anaesthesia. On the basis of known cases of subglutaeal abscess, it cannot be concluded that pudendal anaesthesia should be relinquished.

Review of 1400 epidural anaesthesias during labour and delivery. The single shot method resulted in complete analgesia in 83.8% of the cases. There were 2.8% failures. ⋯ Another dangerous complication was noted in a Para 2 who suffered a complete uterine rupture below the level of the epidural anesthesia without any clinical signs and symptoms. Therefore continual internal fetal monitoring is considered to be essential in all cases with epidural anaesthesias. Previous caesarean sections or uterine operations are no contra-indications to epidural anaesthesia.

From 1959 to 1975, 1060 (3.6%) breech presentations were found among 29,463 infants. The breech deliveries from May 1, 1959 to December 31, 1965 were compared with those from January 1, 1966 to December 31, 1975. Among the 3.6% breech deliveries there were 47% male and 53% female. ⋯ Of those 90 premature deaths, 28 infants were less than 1000 grams. 25 infants showed fetal congenital abnormalities. The corrected perinatal mortality of the premature deliveries was therefore 11.9%. The rate of birth trauma was 6.3% in the first group and 2.7% in the second group.

[Influence of lumbar peridural anaesthesia on fetal heart rate patterns in the second stage of labour (author's transl)].
The influence of lumbar peridural anaesthesia (PA) on fetal heart rate patterns in the second stage of labour was studied in 218 vaginal deliveries without maternal and fetal risk. A CTG-Score as proposed by Hammacher was used to evaluate fetal heart rate patterns. ⋯ All patients were strictly kept in lateral position throughout the first and second stage of labour. The pushing-period in lateral position was limited to 30 minutes (pushing 3-times per 10 minutes).
