It is surprising to note the evolution of success rates in Belgian universities especially in the first Year. Men are less successful than women and the differences are escalating in an alarming way. Dropouts take the same direction and women now represent a majority of the students at the university. ⋯ They describe the differentiated action of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations on the different components of aggressiveness and test-anxiety according to gender and without experience of failure. The dynamic process of the organizational factors is different according to gender and psychopathology resulting from the combinations of behaviors, cognitions and emotions would be assumed, prioritizing physical aggression and psychopathy by boys, anxiety and depression by girls. Anyway more explanation about the evolution of success rates of boys and girls in Belgian universities is proposed.

Most studies on the quality of life (Qol) of patients with schizophrenia deal with objective living conditions and how they are perceived by hospitalized patients. The few studies that compare Qol for patients treated in part time services with the Qol of ambulatory patients do not show any significant difference in terms of subjective Qol. Some stu-dies evaluate the influence of psychopathology and needs (or expectations) on the subjective Qol in these groups of patients. ⋯ In patients treated in part-time services, the subjective Qol, particularly for living conditions and security, seems sensitive to anxiety and depression. This has also been shown by other studies. Finally, our results underline the importance of patients' expectations in terms of subjective Qol, particularly in the field of relations (family and social) for ambulatory patients.

The practice of physical restraint is relatively frequent in medical emergency and geriatric units. Its use in psychiatry is controversial. Although distinct, it is often associated with seclusion, as a response to or prevention of agitated mentally ill patients'behavior. ⋯ The others was applicable or without object. The therapeutic use of restraint requires the development of specific quality standards, and the existing criteria concerning seclusion represent a necessary but insufficient answer. We emphasize the need to take into account the early warning signs, a response to the cumulative restraint days, as well as a satisfaction study on patients and the feasibility of such a study in an emergency service.

Drugs of the Benzodiazepine family are among the most frequently prescribed in France. Since anxiety disorders, for which these substances are mostly indicated, affect 10% of pregnant women, it is very likely that such a treatment could expose many foetuses to BZD during the first three Months of pregnancy. We know that the teratologic effect is not necessarily based on dose rate, but that it is associated with fetal drug exposure during the first 12 weeks of gestation, when organ formation occurs. ⋯ Step 4: similarly, the lorazepam/anal atresia finding was upheld when the analysis was restricted to the 262 malformed infants exposed to BZDs in utero. Six cases of anal atresia were found among all newborns exposed to BZD in utero, and five of them were exposed to lorazepam, representing a hypothesis to be tested in further. We are not aware of other reports of this association, and it should be regarded as preliminary until confirmed in other data sets.

Surgery can be proposed for some patients affected by psychiatric diseases such as severe, disabling and refractory affective disorders (depression), OCD and chronic anxiety states. It can be performed after a period of evolution of minimum 5 Years and after all other classical treatments have failed. For the last Years, different stereotactic techniques have been used: capsulotomy, cingulotomy, subcaudate tractotomy and limbic leukotomy, performed by radiofrequency thermolesions or radiosurgery (g rays). ⋯ Although psychosurgery is still controversial from an ethical view point, this treatment appears to be an ultimate solution for these severe disabled patients. Psychosurgery is a safe and relatively effective treatment which should be carried out by an expert multidisciplinary team in these disorders; surgery should be considered as part of an entire treatment program including an appropriate psychiatric rehabilitation part. Research in this field is currently focused on MRI-guided basal ganglia stimulation techniques which would allow to target specific structures in a reversible way.
