Successful linking of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database to Social Security data to examine the accuracy of Society of Thoracic Surgeons mortality data.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database has been linked to the Social Security Death Master File to verify "life status" and evaluate long-term surgical outcomes. The objective of this study is explore practical applications of the linkage of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database to Social Securtiy Death Master File, including the use of the Social Securtiy Death Master File to examine the accuracy of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons 30-day mortality data. ⋯ Linkage to the Social Security Death Master File confirms the accuracy of data describing "mortality within 30 days of surgery" in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Social Security Death Master File link reveals that capture of 30-day deaths occurring before discharge is highly accurate, and that these in-hospital deaths represent the majority (79% [13,014/16,565]) of all 30-day deaths. Capture of the remaining 30-day deaths occurring after discharge is less complete and needs improvement. Efforts continue to encourage Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database participants to submit Social Security numbers to the Database, thereby enhancing accurate determination of 30-day life status. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Social Security Death Master File linkage can facilitate ongoing refinement of mortality reporting.

Bioengineered human and allogeneic pulmonary valve conduits chronically implanted orthotopically in baboons: hemodynamic performance and immunologic consequences.
This study assesses in a baboon model the hemodynamics and human leukocyte antigen immunogenicity of chronically implanted bioengineered (decellularized with collagen conditioning treatments) human and baboon heart valve scaffolds. ⋯ Valve dysfunction correlated with markers for more intense inflammatory provocation. The tested bioengineering methods reduced antigenicity of both human and baboon valves. Bioengineered replacement valves from both species were hemodynamically equivalent to native valves.

Time in the stair-climbing test as a predictor of thoracotomy postoperative complications.
The stair-climbing test as measured in meters or number of steps has been proposed to predict the risk of postoperative complications. The study objective was to determine whether the stair-climbing time can predict the risk of postoperative complications. ⋯ The only variable showing association with complications, according to multivariate analysis, was stair-climbing time.

Pulmonary artery (PA) sling is a rare vascular anomaly associated with congenital tracheal stenosis. The natural history is poor and these patients often require early surgical intervention. We describe our experience with repair of this condition. ⋯ Children with PA sling who do not require tracheal surgery have excellent outcomes. Mortality is determined by the need for tracheal surgery. However, with the advent of the slide tracheoplasty technique, mortality can be reduced. Survival beyond 1 year after surgery offers excellent prognosis.

Quantifying the incidence and impact of postoperative prolonged alveolar air leak after pulmonary resection.
Prolonged alveolar air leak (PAAL) is a frequent occurrence after lobectomy or lesser resections. The resulting complications and their impact are not well understood. Our aims are to prospectively determine the incidence and severity of PAAL after pulmonary resection using the Thoracic Morbidity & Mortality classification system and to identify risk factors. ⋯ PAAL leads to longer hospital stays, and approximately 4.8% of patients undergoing pulmonary resection experience PAAL that necessitates placement of additional chest drains, bronchoscopy, reoperation, or life support. Further study is required to assess the cost-effectiveness of measures to reduce PAAL.
