The Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS) in Broome, Western Australia, conducted a 4 month program to augment the Pap smear screening of Aboriginal women. The emphasis was on those with a past history of abnormal smears, aged greater than 40 years, living in remote communities and very (more than 5 years) overdue. ⋯ Use of a computerised process tool in a remote setting can facilitate selective recruitment of high risk women overdue for Pap smears.

Diseases such as primary open angle glaucoma, diabetes, strabismus and retinoblastoma have been found to have improved outcome by early investigations. Australian GPs are currently well placed to enhance their role in preventable blindness. ⋯ Undertaking visual assessment in both children and adults can have benefits in reducing the incidence of preventable blindness in the community. Upskilling and having protocols to work to can enhance the GP's ability to offer this preventive service.

There are a large number of free services for people who are blind or vision impaired. ⋯ General practitioners are well placed to provide information to patients about these services. Appropriate support from blindness agencies can enable people who are blind or vision impaired to live independent lives.

The impact of a computer generated patient held health record.
To examine the use and impact of a computer generated, patient held health record (PHR) on information sharing, responsibility sharing and preventive health care. ⋯ The computer generated PHR is an important determinant of patient participation in information and responsibility sharing, health promotion, and disease management. Implementation and evaluation studies are recommended.
