Performance of Quick Sequential (Sepsis Related) and Sequential (Sepsis Related) Organ Failure Assessment to Predict Mortality in Patients with Acute Pyelonephritis Associated with Upper Urinary Tract Calculi.
The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock Task Force proposed a new definition of sepsis based on the SOFA (Sequential [Sepsis-related] Organ Failure Assessment) score and introduced a novel scoring system, quickSOFA, to screen patients at high risk for sepsis. However, the clinical usefulness of these systems is unclear. Therefore, we investigated predictive performance for mortality in patients with acute pyelonephritis associated with upper urinary tract calculi. ⋯ SOFA and quickSOFA are more clinically useful scoring systems than SIRS to predict mortality in patients with acute pyelonephritis associated with upper urinary tract calculi.

Purified Protein Derivative Skin test prior to bacillus Calmette-Guérin Therapy May have Therapeutic Impact in Patients with Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.
We investigated the clinical impact of the purified protein derivative skin test prior to bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy in patients with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer treated with adjuvant bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy. ⋯ The purified protein derivative skin test prior to bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment enhances the therapeutic effects of this treatment and potentially results in a higher incidence of major bacillus Calmette-Guérin related side effects. Combination therapy with bacillus Calmette-Guérin using the purified protein derivative skin test may improve the oncologic outcomes of that therapy.

Detrusor Acontractility after Acute Spinal Cord Injury-Myth or Reality?
We assessed urodynamic parameters within the first 40 days after spinal cord injury to investigate whether the detrusor is acontractile during the acute phase of spinal cord injury. ⋯ In contrast to the common notion of an acontractile detrusor during acute spinal cord injury, almost two-thirds of our patients showed unfavorable urodynamic parameters within the first 40 days after spinal cord injury. Considering that early treatment of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction in patients with acute spinal cord injury might improve the long-term urological outcome, urodynamic investigation should be performed timely to optimize patient tailored therapy.
