Multicenter Study
Health care-associated infections among critically ill children in the US, 2007-2012.
Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are harmful and costly and can result in substantial morbidity for hospitalized children; however, little is known about national trends in HAIs in neonatal and pediatric populations. Our objective was to determine the incidence of HAIs among a large sample of hospitals in the United States caring for critically ill children from 2007 to 2012. ⋯ Between 2007 and 2012 there were substantial reductions in HAIs among hospitalized neonates and children.

To describe the design features, utilization, and outcomes of a protocol treating children with status asthmaticus with continuous albuterol in the inpatient setting. ⋯ With appropriate support structures and care processes, continuous albuterol can be delivered effectively in the non-ICU, inpatient setting with low rates of adverse outcomes. Certain initial clinical characteristics may help identify patients needing more intensive therapy.

Competing priorities in pediatric practice have created challenges for practice-based research. To increase recruitment success, researchers must design studies that provide added value to participants. This study evaluates recruitment of pediatricians into a study, before and after the development and addition of a quality improvement (QI) curriculum approved for American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 4 Credit as an enrollment incentive. ⋯ Addition of MOC Part 4 Credit increased recruitment success and increased enrollment of pediatricians working in underserved areas. Including QI initiatives meeting MOC Part 4 criteria in practice-based research protocols may enhance participation and aid in recruiting diverse practice and patient populations.

Case Reports
Rapid regression of left ventricular outflow tract rhabdomyoma after sirolimus therapy.
The neonatal presentation of cardiac rhabdomyomas varies in severity from severe outflow tract obstruction to minimal cardiac dysfunction. The natural history for these lesions is spontaneous regression in the majority of cases. ⋯ Oral sirolimus therapy resulted in a rapid regression of the tumor and alleviation of outflow tract obstruction within 1 month of treatment. This is the first report of sirolimus therapy in alleviating critical left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in this condition.

Parental awareness and use of online physician rating sites.
The US public is increasingly using online rating sites to make decisions about a variety of consumer goods and services, including physicians. We sought to understand, within the context of other types of rating sites, parents' awareness, perceptions, and use of physician-rating sites for choosing primary care physicians for their children. ⋯ Parents are beginning to use online physician ratings, and these ratings have the potential to influence choices of their children's primary care physician.
