Randomized Controlled TrialNeuroprotective impact of a vitamin trace element composition - a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial with healthy volunteers.
Neurotoxic metabolites and oxidative and nitrosative stress reactions play a crucial role in the pathways leading to neuronal cell death and neurodegeneration. The bioavailability of the many antioxidant ingredients a vitamin and trace element composition was investigated, to reveal the neuroprotective (preventive) potential of the composition. ⋯ The observed metabolic changes and alteration of the oxidative status after 3 and six month of regular intake underlines the compositions' potential to ameliorate neurodegenerative processes. We conclude that the subsitution of vitamins and trace-elements with natural source in a proper manner may be effective for neuroprotection in healthy population.

Observational StudyDynamic neuroendocrine changes in critically ill patients with polytrauma.
Acute multiple-trauma induces activation of neuroendocrine system. Nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) is considered to be associated with adverse outcome in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This study was aimed to assess dynamic changes of neuroendocrine hormones in patients with polytrauma and their association with the polytrauma score (PTS). ⋯ Critical illness in patients with polytrauma leaded to trauma severity-dependent alterations of the thyroid axis response early after injury. Our findings suggest that detection of dynamic hormonal response is more appropriate than single measurement. However supplemental therapy for NTIS should be used after more detailed studies are completed.

Imaging findings after methanol intoxication (cohort of 46 patients).
Our goal is to demonstrate the variability of imaging findings, primarily in the MRI, in 46 patients who survived acute methanol poisoning. This cohort of patients is the largest such sample group examined by MRI. ⋯ Almost half of the patients who survived acute methanol poisoning had pathological findings by MRI. The most common finding concerned an affliction of the putamen, which is a predilection area. An interesting finding was the relatively frequent occurrence of selective lesion of the globus pallidus, which is more usually associated with other types of intoxication.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyMinimal access spinal technologies (MAST) fusion procedures for the treatment of the degenerative lumbar spine (a part of multicentral prospective study). Case Report.
A prospective multicentral observational study of minimally invasive fusion to treat degenerative lumbar disorders, and to report outcomes of one or two level minimally invasive posterior lumbar interbody fusion (MLIF) for degenerative lumbar disorders in a multi-center 1-year prospective study. We prospectively studied a group of 32 patients, mostly female 24 (75% female), and 8 males (25%). They underwent minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (mTLIF), 21 of them monosegmental and 11 bisegmental. ⋯ Mean surgical duration, blood loss and intraoperative fluoroscopy time were 125 vs. 175 minutes, 150 vs. 170 ml, and 105 vs. 145 seconds in one- and two-level segments, respectively. Mean preoperative VAS back (6.5) and VAS leg (7.9) scores dropped significantly (p<0.0001) to 3.5 (2.6) and 2.6 (2.0) at discharge (6 weeks). At the end, this is the largest prospective multi-center observational study of MLIF to date, following routine local standard of practice and, MLIF demonstrated favourable clinical results with early and sustained improvement in patient reported outcomes and low major perioperative morbidity.

Heart rate variability in children with inflammatory bowel diseases.
Heart rate variability (HRV) oscillations are used in the detection of autonomic instabilities in various clinical disorders. ⋯ These results indicate children with IBD have less adaptability to stress.
