A group of 427 students on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands was studied to obtain baseline data on some anthropometric measures, biochemical values, food habits, and educational parameters. Body weight was similar for four-to-seven-year-old students. ⋯ I. adolescents, mean intakes of the vegetable-fruit and meat groups were higher. A trend existed between poor academic achievement and low food score. The extent of the contribution of the various factors on the assessed status needs to be appraised.

The Chinese restaurant syndrome consists of a characteristic symptom complex, with limited times of onset and duration after eating in a Chinese restaurant. There is widespread belief that the C. R. ⋯ Nevertheless, when the phrase "Chinese restaurant syndrome" was introduced in a second questionnaire, 31 per cent of respondents believed that they were personally susceptible to it. Many people do experience unpleasant symptoms after eating, and particularly after eating food associated with a different culture. Although the responses to food symptomatology questionnaires represent an important aspect of the sociology of eating behavior, this procedure should not be considered an objective data collecting system.

Over the last several years, the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs has conducted hearings in an effort to obtain experts' recommendations, prior to proposing legislation to establish a comprehensive national nutrition plan. The framework for such a plan, as developed by the Committee, is presented here. ⋯ In addition, there would be a National Nutrition Center in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, charged with day-to-day administration of expanded nutrition program. This Center would operate at the Sub-Cabinet level.
