Heparin is not required for peripheral intravenous locks in neonates.
To determine the relative efficacy and safety of peripheral intravenous locks maintained with heparin saline solutions compared with those maintained with normal saline. ⋯ Heparin is not required for the maintenance of peripheral intravenous locks in neonates regardless of the solution used. Catheter occlusion is more likely to be associated with a low gestational age and the administration of vancomycin and cefotaxime versus ampicillin and gentamicin.
