Multicenter StudyEvolution of Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation Use: A Cohort Study Among Italian PICUs.
To assess how clinical practice of noninvasive ventilation has evolved in the Italian PICUs. ⋯ Noninvasive ventilation is increasingly and successfully used as first respiratory approach in several, but not all, Italian PICUs. The current study shows that noninvasive ventilation represents a feasible and safe technique of ventilatory assistance for the treatment of mild acute respiratory failure. Noninvasive ventilation was used as primary mode of ventilation in children with low respiratory tract infection (mainly in bronchiolitis and pneumonia), in acute on chronic respiratory failure or to prevent reintubation.

Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of Serum Cystatin C in Critically Ill Children With Acute Kidney Injury.
We aimed to evaluate the value of serum cystatin C for detection of acute kidney injury and pediatric Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, End-Stage Renal Disease categories in critically ill children and to investigate whether serum cystatin C was associated with outcome. ⋯ Cystatin C is an early and accurate biomarker for acute kidney injury and pediatric Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, End-Stage Renal Disease categories, and it is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in a heterogeneous population of critically ill children.

Detection of Electrographic Seizures by Critical Care Providers Using Color Density Spectral Array After Cardiac Arrest Is Feasible.
To determine the accuracy and reliability of electroencephalographic seizure detection by critical care providers using color density spectral array electroencephalography. ⋯ Determining which post-cardiac arrest patients experience electrographic seizures by critical care providers is feasible after a brief training. There is moderate sensitivity for seizure and status epilepticus detection and a high negative predictive value.

Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Consensus Recommendations From the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference.
To describe the final recommendations of the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference. ⋯ The Consensus Conference developed pediatric-specific definitions for acute respiratory distress syndrome and recommendations regarding treatment and future research priorities. These are intended to promote optimization and consistency of care for children with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome and identify areas of uncertainty requiring further investigation.

Monitoring of Children With Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Proceedings From the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference.
To critically review the potential role of monitoring technologies in the management of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, and specifically regarding monitoring of the general condition, respiratory system mechanics, severity scoring parameters, imaging, hemodynamic status, and specific weaning considerations. ⋯ The Consensus Conference developed pediatric-specific recommendations related to monitoring children with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. These include interpreting monitored values such as tidal volume using predicted body weight, monitoring tidal volume at the end of the endotracheal tube in small children, and continuous monitoring of exhaled carbon dioxide in intubated children with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, among others. These recommendations for monitoring in pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome are intended to promote optimization and consistency of care for children with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome and identify areas of uncertainty requiring further investigation.
