Isıyel E, Tekşam Ö, Foto-Özdemir D, Özmert E, Tümer AR, Kale G. Home accident or physical abuse: Evaluation of younger children presenting with trauma, burn and poisoning in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Turk J Pediatr 2018; 60: 625-632. ⋯ Moreover, age group and income were significant risk factors in the logistic regression model for the patients who were thought to be suspected abuse/abused in univariate analyses (age group: Odds ratio (OR) 0.279, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.085-0.723, p=0.0049; income: OR 2.323, 95% CI 1.052-6.198, p=0.0345). In conclusion, most cases of physical abuse and neglect are referred to the pediatric emergency clinics, and these patients are misdiagnosed as home accidents. The physicians working in the emergency department should be informed and trained in recognizing the cases of abuse and neglect, making the differential diagnosis, identifying the high-risk families and appropriate physical and psychological treatment for the abused and neglected children.

Comparison between high-flow nasal oxygen cannula and conventional oxygen therapy after extubation in pediatric intensive care unit.
Akyıldız B, Öztürk S, Ülgen-Tekerek N, Doğanay S, Görkem SB. Comparison between high-flow nasal oxygen cannula and conventional oxygen therapy after extubation in pediatric intensive care unit. Turk J Pediatr 2018; 60: 126-133. ⋯ Extubation failure rates were 4% and 22% for the HFNC and COT groups, respectively (p=0.007). In conclusion, HFNC is better than COT, especially for the restoration of the respiratory and radiologic parameters. Although more expensive, the use of HFNC may have more advantages to reduce the risk of extubation failure in critically ill children compared with COT.

Özdemir Ö. An asthmatic child with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Turk J Pediatr 2018; 60: 446-452. ⋯ With the clinical and laboratory findings, the patient fulfilled 7/8 major diagnostic criteria for ABPA. Treatment with oral corticosteroids and itraconazole was effective. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pediatric ABPA with previously documented asthma from Turkey.

Yazıcı S, Güneş S, Kurtuluş-Çokboz M, Kemer Ö, Baranlı G, Aşık-Akman S, Can D. Allergen variability and house dust mite sensitivity in pre-school children with allergic complaints. Turk J Pediatr 2018; 60: 41-49. ⋯ As the age increased, significant increases in the sensitivities of Der f (p < 0.01), Der p (P < 0.01) and A. alternata (p < 0.05) and a significant decrease for food panel sensitivity (p < 0.01) were detected. Even though skin and food allergies were included in our study, house dust mite sensitivity was found much higher than other studies reporting ranges between 3.5-23% in children of the same age group with mainly respiratory complaints. It is concluded that the probable reasons for this increase, especially geographical features, should be investigated in different areas and in larger number of studies.
