Administration of olanzapine to prevent postoperative delirium in elderly joint-replacement patients: a randomized, controlled trial.
Delirium is a serious postoperative condition for which few pharmacologic prevention trials have been conducted. ⋯ Administration of 10 mg of oral olanzapine perioperatively, versus placebo, was associated with a significantly lower incidence of delirium. These findings suggest that olanzapine prophylaxis of postoperative delirium may be an effective strategy.

Delirium is a common neuropsychiatric disorder in medical and surgical inpatients of all ages. It is associated with increased long-term mortality, longer length of hospital stay, poor functional recovery, and increased likelihood of nursing home placement. ⋯ This study indicates that the Japanese version of the DRS-R-98 has high reliability and validity, and is a useful tool for assessing delirium among Japanese medically ill populations.
