Endoscopic technique in the treatment of patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle. Report based on over a decade of experience.
The aim of the work was a retrospective analysis of the efficiency of endoscopic treatment of patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle. ⋯ Recurrences of colloidal cysts after subtotal and partial removal do not occur very often, and the time of the recurrence may either be very long or it may not happen at all. Although we recommend complete removal of the cyst, this should not be pursued at the cost of incurring operative complications.

Review[Pathogenetic justification of statin use in ischaemic stroke prevention according to inflammatory theory in development of atherosclerosis].
There is an inflammatory component in the pathogenesis of ischaemic stroke, which plays an important role in inducing atherothrombotic and embolic stroke. Statins, HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A) reductase inhibitors are widely used in the primary and secondary prevention of ischaemic stroke. ⋯ Additional benefits from the use of statins result from their effect on the immune system. Increased risk of recurrent vascular episodes and risk of death after statin withdrawal in patients with vascular disorders is connected with termination of the anti-inflammatory effect of these drugs. The authors highlight that because of the anti-inflammatory effect of statins it is reasonable to use them in all patients at risk of ischaemic stroke, including those with atrial fibrillation.

Intraoperative magnetic resonance-guided frameless stereotactic biopsies - initial clinical experience.
We present our early experience in intraoperative magnetic resonance (iMRI)-guided stereotactic frameless biopsies with special regard to its safety, efficacy and diagnostic value. ⋯ Frameless stereotactic iMRI-guided brain tumour biopsy is a safe and diagnostically effective procedure. The use of iMRI might increase the diagnostic value and safety of stereotactic biopsy and positively influence its economic balance.

Weekend versus weekday admissions in Polish stroke centres -- could admission day affect prognosis in Polish ischaemic stroke patients?
Disparities in resources, access to the expertise and healthcare providers both at hospital and before admission, or patients' awareness of stroke symptoms can cause differences in weekend and weekday stroke severity and prognosis. The aim of the study was to explore differences in baseline characteristics and outcomes of ischaemic stroke patients admitted on weekdays and weekends. ⋯ Admissions on weekends are associated with higher mortality and poor outcome, and that can be only partially explained by differences in baseline characteristics of admitted patients.

Fluorescence-guided resection of primary and recurrent malignant gliomas with 5-aminolevulinic acid. Preliminary results.
Extent of resection plays a key role in the treatment of malignant gliomas (MGs). Patients with complete glioma removal, followed by chemoradiation, obtain the longest overall and progression-free survival. Fluorescence-guided resection of MGs enables intraoperative visualization of glioma tissue and increases control of the resection. The authors present preliminary results of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) application during the resection of primary and recurrent MGs. ⋯ Fluorescence-guided resection of primary and recurrent MGs with 5-ALA improves control of the tumour resection. It enables the cytoreduction to be maximized but experience in neuro-oncological surgery is required to avoid serious, postoperative neurological deficits.
