We investigated the potential concordance of 2 different magnetic resonance (MR) sequences - short-tau inversion recovery (STIR) and fat-saturated T1-weighted spin-echo after application of gadolinium (Gd) contrast medium to detect active bone marrow abnormalities at the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). ⋯ Active bone marrow abnormalities were detected nearly equally well with STIR and Gd-enhanced fat-suppressed T1 sequences in patients with SpA, with STIR being most sensitive to visualize active abnormalities in the periphery of chronic changes.

To describe and compare the prevalence of lifetime and current self-reported comorbidity and associated quality of life in 4 rheumatic diseases, and to investigate comorbid conditions in light of the overlap between the index condition and comorbid conditions (CC), and in the context of symptom-type diagnoses. ⋯ Four patterns of comorbidity emerged: that associated with aging; that associated with aging but enhanced by the index condition, as in SLE and cardiovascular disease; comorbidity that is part of the symptoms complex of the index condition; and CC that represent lifetime traits or manifestations of the underlying illness. Depression was the most strongly associated correlate of EQ-5D quality of life, and current depression was present in about 15% of patients with RA or NIRD and 34% to 39% of those with SLE and FM.

To compare the Quantiferon-TB Gold test (QTF-G) with the tuberculin skin test (TST) for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), with reevaluation of the patients treated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) antagonists in the followup. ⋯ The comparable prevalence of LTBI among the study groups according to QTF-G supports the view that QTF-G is less susceptible to external factors than TST. Sequential testing for QTF-G in patients with indeterminate or negative results may also be helpful in discriminating LTBI better.
